Theme: Heroes of faith (5)

Text: Heb 12:2

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. NKJV

Topic: Moses chose suffering over the crown

Today’s Reading: Heb 11:24-27

24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Words of the Ministry:

Moses when he was 3 months old was placed in a basket on the river Nile with his sister watching over him (Exo 2-5), luckily for Moses, he was picked up by pharaohs daughter, she brought him into the palace and was being treated not just like an ordinary Egyptian but one from the royal family. Some say he had the opportunity of even becoming pharaoh someday. God ensured his mother had the opportunity to nurse him as she was called upon to nurse him while he was still a baby. Moses grew up to see himself as a prince in Egypt, he was a fine young man that had the best education, he never lacked any good thing nor suffer pain, he lived in affluence with maids and servants at his call. He was the envy of other Israelites who were slaves. One could say he was enjoying a breakthrough, a rare privilege, infact in today’s words we may even say he is enjoying divine favor.

Moses on realizing his true identity, began to look out for ways to help other Israelites, unlike many Christians today who would rather keep their appointment and position in the midst of unbeliever for monetary gains. Moses became bothered  wondering why the Hebrews would continue in slavery, Moses wasn’t satisfied that only him was free and other suffering, despite knowing the consequence, Moses defended an Israelite from an Egyptian and eventually killed him, the event made him flee Egypt as the new broke and pharaoh was after Moses. As a result of this, Moses that previously rode on the chariot while people bowed and servants worshipped him now became a fugitive running from pillar to post having no place to hide. Isn’t this the fear of many saints, you don’t want to lose your relevance among unbelievers or even in a church or community where evil is striving, you don’t want to suffer, you fear of losing that connection, accommodation, job or favor keeps you subjected in a sinful system.

Moses fled Egypt, losing his future crown, his best friends, his connections, whatever savings he had etc., infact he even lost favor with the Hebrews who he attempted helping. At that point many would regret their actions and find a way to plead with pharaoh in order to keep enjoying the wealth in Egypt. Moses who sent others now became a mere servant, he was not even taking care of men but cattle, sheep and goats, he had to walk long distances to take care of mere animals and if any got missing, he couldn’t return home without it. A man that moved around in what we call in today’s word a VIP Convoy is now walking alone on bare feet in the bush, the animals he ate at will now became what determined his daily pay. One can imagine the midianites making fun of him whenever he shared the story of Egypt, some would say he is lying as he doesn’t look it, other would say he must have been a criminal to be chased out of Egypt and some others would even say he is being punished by God. Moses endured the suffering and later was mightily used of God to deliver Israel from captivity, he served as a Shepard for 40 years and one could have said he lived a wasted life but at the end we see that God made it worth the years as his life is a mirror for many todays.

Saints many of us are the Moses of today, you may have enjoyed the benefits of friendship in the world, your current position, appointment, connection and influence may have been from Egypt but God is calling you to stand with him and suffer for his kingdom. You cannot continue to play along just because you want to avoid suffering. Following the Lord would cost us a lot (Luk 9.23) but we must chose suffering over the wealth of Egypt. Many would say you are foolish, you are under the influence of witchcraft or maybe nemesis has caught up with you eventually but you must look away to the end, the eventual consequence of walking with God. You must count all this as dung to gain the excellency of Christ. Today we read about the life of Moses and we are nourished, what would happen when men read about you after you are gone. May the Lord grant us light.
