Theme: Overcoming Deception (7)

Memory Verse: Col 2:8  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Topic: Antidote to deception

Today’s Reading: Rev 3:17 -18

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18  I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Words of the Ministry:

Through the week, we have seen the dangers of deception and the goal of the deceiver, we have seen how we become vulnerable and the consequences of living in a deceived state. Today I like to talk about the antidote to deception, what can be done when a Church or an individual realizes that they have been deceived and are at the verge of being destroyed.  The first thing we would notice is that realizing we have been in deception only happens through the power of prayer by intercessors, an encounter with the word and a conviction of the Holy Spirit. When this happens and we realize that indeed we are at risk, what do we do? I would be considering a Church in revelation that was in same state and the counsel they got from the Lord.

The Church in Laodicea (Rev 3.6-13) was in the state of deception verse 17 says they had a wrong impression about themselves, words like wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked were used to describe the Church. In their own opinion all was well and the Lord was happy with their state because of the physical things happening around them. The counsel of the Lord was three-fold as follows:

  • Buy from me Gold refined by fire that you may be rich: To buy as we have seen in previous lessons is to pay a price, we learnt that salvation cost us our lives and one of the reason many are deceived is because they don’t want to pay the price of following Jesus, the deceived must buy Gold, Gold, signifies the divine nature of God, it also signifies our working faith which is purified as Gold (Gal 5.6, 1 Pet 1.7). We then see that beyond head knowledge and doctrine, God wants us to live out Christ as our reality, our true riches, our wealth.
  • Buy from me white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed: garment or raiment signifies our conduct, white garment here signify conduct that can be approved by the Lord. Such conduct is the Lord himself lived out of the saints and it is required as a covering for the nakedness of the deceived. At this point we see that true covering is not our dogma, Church name or position rather Christ as our life, lived out organically. Such persons must therefore be sincere, ask themselves of their true condition.
  • Anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see: The deceived must also ensure that he buys eyesalve which is to anoint the eyes so that they may see themselves as they really are. The eyesalve is the working of the Holy Spirit that bring conviction, when a Christian become blinded by the world, he must be willing to allow the Holy Spirit to take over his sight. We must be willing to let go of the sins that easily beset us, the weight of the world and worldliness.
