Words of the Ministry
Today we are looking at the heart condition of kingdom people, Jesus severally commented on the condition of the human heart as it defines who we really are, for instance he said in Matt 15:18-19 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: KJV. The heart is your real person and how pure your heart is would determine your relationship with God. The scribe and Pharisees were rebuked by Jesus, despite being religious leaders, they were said to be hypocrites, cleaning the outside of the cup and plate while the inside is full of greed and self-indulgence (Matt 23.25). From the outward, the Pharisees looked okay but God who sees the secrets of the heart knew they were highly polluted, sons of the devil, John the Baptist called them vipers, so we see that while your outward appearances can easily deceive people, God knows our heart.
Many believers look healthy because we look at their outward disposition, they can be said to be free of lust, pride, greed and anger but in reality they are as bad as those that exhibit those traits. Under the old covenant, a man needs to commit adultery to sin but in the new, the lust in the heart makes you commit adultery. In the old testament, the heart of Israelites was referred to as being made of stone and for God to bring them into the new covenant, he had to give them a new heart, a heart of flesh. By implication, a heart of flesh was to mean a heart that is responsive to God and that can love God. God writing on their heart is to put his Spirit in man’s heart. To be pure in heart is to accept the dominion of God in our heart, to let God reign, doing away with secret sins confessing and exposing them under the light of God.
The intention of Jesus is not to change our outward look making us like the Pharisee but to change us from the inside, from the heart. So we should not be satisfied that a woman is not wearing trousers, earrings or certain clothes rather we should look out for the condition of the heart and from the heart expect to see an outward change. Many of us are training people to become religious and not necessarily born again, the implication of this is that we would raise men and women that have the language, form and appearances but do not have the life. To see God, we must live God in our heart, our heart must be pure. We see two examples Jesus and Stephen, both of them while being killed saw God because they had a pure heart, they prayed for their persecutors saying God should forgive them. In both examples, we see a heart free of vengeance, malice, anger, bitterness, lust and pride. The question is how pure is your heart?
