Words of the Ministry
We come to the second characteristics of the kingdom people, they are those that mourn. This may seem contradictory as the word Greek word blessed used in this verse could also mean happy. So we can also read the verse as Happy are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. This is totally opposite our natural concept and contradicts the norm of the society. The society teaches us that happy are those who have all the material wants of this life, the power, connection, position, properties, when your dreams and aspirations go your way etc but we see a serious drift from our natural concept as the kingdom men who would love the Lord in this age must have a different word dictionary.
Jesus is saying happy are the broken hearted, the journey is full of stones and broken bottles, our walk with God is full of bruises and persecution, when we love the Lord ultimately, after emptying our old and natural concepts, cutting ties with the world, choosing God not just first but always, we begin to face several situations that would make us mourn, we mourn for the sinfulness of this age, we mourn for the several challenges in our family, homes, businesses, city and even in the church. Our mourning is not limited to external matters only, we at times mourn for our spiritual condition, 2 Cor 7.10 talks about Godly sorrow, as Christians we mourn over our condition and that leads to repentance. The Scripture is full of examples of individuals that mourn for instance we see Jesus mourn over Jerusalem, we see Peter and Paul mourn over their Spiritual condition, in the Old Testament we see David and even Prophet Isiah and Jeremiah also mourning. At times our mourning could involve situations that calls for intense fasting as Jesus equated fasting with mourning in Mat 9.15.
Praise the Lord, we are not just mourners, we have a promise of being comforted. Jesus reeling out his mission statement quoted Isi 61.1-2, “…. to comfort those that mourn” Today, Jesus is not with us in his humanity but we have him in our spirit as the Holy Spirit to comfort us that mourn, John 14:16” And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever”. Dear saints, the Holy Spirit is with us forever, regardless of what makes you mourn, could it be your spiritual condition, childlessness, a divorce, your unsaved children, financial challenges or even health challenges. Reach out to the Lord, he is within you and he is our burden bearer and surely he would comfort you with rest (Mat 11.28-30), amen.
