Words of the Ministry
This week, we would be considering the famous sermon on the mount, where the Lord gave us certain kingdom guidelines. We intend to look at a few verses in that chapter starting from today and see how it can be applied to our daily living as it’s a description of the life every kingdom person is expected to live. I would be relating it to our central text as we would be discussing how living the kingdom life can build our intimacy with God.
Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God. Jesus giving us the condition for the kingdom said the first requirement was to be poor in Spirit. Many do not know they even have a Spirit and neither do they know that God wants us to worship him not just Spiritually but in the Spirit. The organ with which we contact God is not our mouth but our Spirit. The concept of some individuals is that all they need to enter the kingdom is to have a change of mind and be emotional. To be poor in the Spirit is to be empty of every concept or religious idea, to have nothing we can boast of from our past, it is to come to the Lord saying just as I am, it means to have nothing else in our Spirit but God.
The bible says our spirit can also become filthy, such filth is from the natural riches of the human soul and they all constitute junk 2 Cor 7:1” Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God”. That was the condition of the Pharisees and Sadducees, they had their Spirit filled with knowledge, customs, and traditions. Many todays have their natural bitterness, love, and anger fill their Spirit. To be poor in the Spirit is to come open to the Lord putting all away. I must also emphasize that to be poor in Spirit is not to have a poor Spirit. To be poor in Spirit is to have nothing but God in our Spirit, while to have a poor Spirit is to have everything but God in our Spirit, it is being filled with junks. We must like Paul count every attainment of our past concept, natural life and traditions as loss on account of Christ Phil 3.8-10.
Dear reader, the first requirement to see the kingdom and enter into it is to be poor in the Spirit, it is to have God enter your Spirit, it means to get what Adam and Eve fell short of, it is to be born again, to be one with God in the Spirit. You may be born into a religious family, you may be a church worker, a minister, you may even be preaching Salvation and be a very good author. Your pastor and friends may hold you in high esteem for your commitments and contributions but if you have not emptied your Spirit of all your natural goodness and concept having only God within, you have a poor Spirit full of Junk. Christ is our true riches and only him has the right to our Spirit. To be intimate with God, you must be poor in your Spirit.,
