Topic: Ruth prepared to meet her Lord
Today’s Reading: Ruth 3:1-4
Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you? 2 Now Boaz, whose young women you were with, is he not our relative? In fact, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. 3 Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 Then it shall be, when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies; and you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down; and he will tell you what you should do.” NKJV
Words of the Ministry:
In the week, we have learnt that Ruth was a type of a believer who left the world to follow Christ. We saw her many sorrows, pains and affliction. We also noticed her perseverance and character. We did emphasize that her character overtime made people forget her past, we can say Ruth as a Christian type was growing properly in life. Today I intend to further apply her story from chapter 3. We would be looking at a few verses to draw some applicable light to our life. We learnt in previous lessons that the Christian journey involves some number of sufferings which doesn’t last forever as it is to further conform us to the image of Christ as we saw in the life of Ruth. Soon enough our situation changes as we approach the Lord in prayers, we would see a type of such from the life of Ruth.
From the passage, we have learnt that Boaz was a kinsman to Naomi and a possible husband to be, as a result Nomi advised Ruth on the way to approach Boaz a type of Christ in order to get noticed so that he may redeem her and that would have been an answer to the questions of her life. By implication we would be looking at how we are to approach our Lord in times of need. Naomi advised Ruth to wash yourself, anoint herself, put on her best garment and go down to the threshing floor. We are to do the same even in our trying times, we must reassure ourselves that the Lord cares for us and has the capacity to meet our need.
In Eph 5.26, the word of God is water, as we walk with the Lord even as we face our daily challenges we must use the word of God as standard and that should lead to repentance and confession of sins in any area we are falling short of God’s demand. We must be ready to take his standards as the only standard if we really desire a life changing encounter. To anoint ourselves likewise means we should let the ministry of the Holy Spirit which is typified by the oil (Eph 5.18), we must be filled of the Spirit ensuring even our prayers is not self-motivated. Ruth was also told to put on her best garment, as it stands for Christ is our best garment, he is our righteousness (1 Cor 130, Rev 19.. As we approach the Lord, we must approach him not with our righteousness or righteous works but by his righteousness as ours is but a filthy rag before him, only Christ is pleasing to God. Lastly she was told to go to the threshing floor, the threshing floor was where Boaz was winnowing the barley, threshing floor is where the Lord separates the wheat from the weed, where the lord extracts the grape juice from the vine. Beloved, the threshing floor is where the lord addressing our excesses and separates our filth.
Saints, Ruth was to do this as she also lied down by his Boaz feet, that signified submission and humility, the two condition we need to approach God and find favor with him. As we have seen, believers needing God’s intervention must examine themselves by the word, why are my going through this situation. They must anoint themselves with oil, we must not pray a selfish prayer to exalt the flesh. Put on your best garment which is Christ as our righteousness and not our works. We must visit the threshing floor, that means the Lord would use even that situation to highlight the many impurities in our life, we must not be blinded by our needs but be willing to repent and lastly we must do all of this in humility and submission as God hates a the proud and gives grace to the humble.
