Words of the Ministry
We began a series yesterday on how we can build a consistent prayer life. We have severally seen the importance of prayers and how men that moved their age did it with prayers, today I like to start out by emphasizing on our need to prioritize prayers in all we do as that is the first step to building a consistent prayer life. The bible gives several instances of Jesus waking up early to pray, he praying before the disciples during the day, and he teaching his disciples to pray. To Jesus, it was a matter of priority. Before the day began, Jesus spent time with the father to determine his path for the day, as the day progressed, he fellowshipped with the father and as the day ended, he still held conversations with the father. Prayer for Jesus therefore wasn’t an avenue to get things but a fellowship with the father because of intimacy and priority.
As we consider today’s reading, we see in verse 6 that the apostle said we should do everything by prayers, our major decisions, our small decisions, our challenges, our victories etc all should be done by prayers. One of the major challenges of Today’s Church is that we have turned prayer to a quick fix, a medium of reaching God to bless our needs, we see prayer as an avenue to make requests and get provisions rather than a fellowship with God in our Spirit. The passage says everything must be done by prayers; we must be in constant fellowship with God in our Spirit. The idea that we only pray when in need is foreign to the gospel, God’s intention since creation was to have constant fellowship with man not only when man needs to pay bills, needs healing etc but just fellowshipping, always having a conversation with the triune God.
Some may ask, how could that be possible, could someone actually have such continuous unbroken prayers with the Lord all day, I would say yes as it starts with an acknowledgement and a consciousness that God is in our Spirit, closer than our neighbors. The second reading says, God is able to do above all that we ask or think, that implies that our fellowship with God is not limited to our outward utterances but also out thought. We can therefore pray to God even as we walk through the day’s activities as God is in our Spirit listening to our thought. Not only does this bring answers to our prayers but as Phi 4.7 states, it brings peace to our hearts and mind. So, saints turn that thought to God in prayer, prioritize prayer before any counsel or google search, seek God as he could be found in your Spirit. Christ is our life.
