Memory Verse for the week: 1Th 5:17: Pray without ceasing.
Today’s Reading:
Act 9:10-12
10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
1Co 14:18
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
Words of the Ministry
Today I would continue our lesson on consistency in prayer by considering the life of Paul and at the same time answering the question as to how a believer can build his prayer stamina and in this case as it relates to spending time in prayers. Many would ask, how do I spend time with God in private prayer, they are amazed when they hear Jesus prayed all through the night, the question they ask is what for. I can remember a story of a pastor who said he spent 24 hours in prayer and while he was excited sharing the news, he heard of another person that does 3 days straight regularly. First off, this is not a competition in the flesh neither does it mean if you spend less amount of time, you are carnal or less spiritual, the essence of this is to help us build our stamina in our secret place. You would remember that I said even our thought is heard and that we should pray everywhere, aside such prayers, it’s also necessary we have specific hours or days in the week exclusively set apart for the Lord.
The first matter is what do I even pray about and for how long would I pray on the subject. To address this, we must realize that prayer is not about your needs alone but that of others, secondly, prayer is not just about asking that a need be met but more of a fellowship. So, the more we carry the burden of others like Aaron did with the names of the tribe of Israel on his garment when he entered the holy of holies, the more we have a reason to spend time with God. Now to the story of Paul, the first reading said when he first encountered the Lord, he went blind and he prayed, I like to assume the prayer was that his sight be restored as his vision and the Lord’s instruction suggests. At that point in Paul’s life, all he could pray was that “God restore my sight”, he may have repeated it severally for 3 days. But later we see same Paul in our second reading, addressing the Church at Corinth saying he prayed in the secret place in tongues more than they all, how did this happen, how did a man with one prayer request become a mighty man of prayers, it was through the little drops of prayer.
Saints, little drops of prayer is a practical approach to building your prayer stamina. To do this, imagine you have 5 prayer requests which normally takes you 5 minutes to pray e.g you pray for your business, family, children, finances and health. Now to build a prayer stamina, you have to look beyond yourself and do beyond personal prayers, you start adding intercession and warfare, you start praying same prayers for sisters and brothers in you family, Church and neighborhood, you make the matter of other nations a priority. As you keep adding to the list, the Lord would give you more prayer burden and add more to your request and the time would move from 5 request in five minutes to 50 in 50 minutes. As you get faithful in this, you would notice again that the time you spend grow relatively as your burden for others grow. This could be likened to a new couple with less needs, they may want to work less but as the need increases maybe 4 dependents, they works harder, save more and invest more because of the burden of their loved ones, love more and see your prayer stamina grow. May the Lord grant us light
