Words of the Ministry
This week we would spend some time of the several implications of Jesus as Christ in the saints. I like to start by distinguishing Jesus from Christ although it has come to be with today ‘s Christian vocabulary that Christ is used in the place of Jesus or to represent the person of Jesus. The word Christ in the Greek means the anointed one while in Hebrew it means the Messiah. From the Old Testament, it was a common thing for the priest, prophet and kings to be anointed. By being anointed, it meant they were separated unto a service.
During the anointing, Oil was literally poured on the persons head and kings were anointed during their coronation. Although the term anointed was used in relation to priests and prophets as we earlier noted, the phrase “anointed one” or “the Lords anointed” was particularly used to refer to a king as we would see in the case of David and Saul (1 Sam 24.6). So unlike our common usage of anointing to suggest the miracle power of God on a man, the anointing is actually an evidence of separation to an office or service. Peter calling Jesus the anointed one therefore meant that he called him the King who is the Son of God, the fulfillment of the promised son of David who was to restore all things.
We can therefore see from the above that although we interchange Jesus for Christ, they don’t mean the same thing as Jesus was crucified on the cross but Christ wasn’t. Jesus’ anointing was by the Holy Spirit who is the reality of the anointing that separates us to God. We saw this in John 1.32 where the Holy Spirit came Upon him (Jesus) signifying to John that he was the expected messiah. Jesus is therefore the anointed, the Christ and as we could say concerning David the son of Jesee that he was the king, we could also say he was the anointed of the Lord. That explains why we can call Jesus our Lord or Jesus the Christ. Jesus being the person and Christ being his office but because unlike others before him, his living and office is actually one, we can say he is Jesus the Christ or Jesus Christ.
Jesus said in John 18.36 that his kingdom was not of this world and he the king would rule from within the disciples John 14.17-18. Hallelujah, the king has established his throne within you, you are the palace of the Triune God (Jhn 14.23). From within our Spirit, Jesus the Christ is ruling, establishing his reign and determining what happens on earth. I like us to have this mentality that we are the throne where God rules. The idea that God is far away from the human realm in a place called heaven although is true has been over emphasized as that is the reality of the Old Testament saints and the unsaved. For the Saints, God rules in heaven and rules in Us, our king lives in Us and the Church is the miniature kingdom on earth. His presence in our Spirit makes us anointed as Lords and Kings in our various spheres, may the Lord grant us light.
