Theme: Kingdom Invasion           (4)                                                                                          3rd January 2023

Topic: David, a type of Christ

Memory Verse: Mat 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Today’s Reading: Luk 1.31-33

31  And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Words of the Ministry:

Yesterday, we saw how God made a promise to Abraham that out of his loins he would bring forth kings, we also learnt the meaning of Jacob’s dream, we said God was again introducing his intention to make heaven on earth, earth a colony of heaven so that his will would be done on earth. I made mention that as the Children of Israel were brought out of slavery, God’ original plan was to make them a kingdom of priest. Here we see the mention of the word kingdom which I did say was a king’s domain. We can therefore say that God wanted them to be made kings and priest just as we see in the New Testament where the bible says we are a royal priesthood, a chosen people, and a holy nation (1 Pet2.9) and in Rev. 1.6, the bible says we have been made kings and priest. We saw yesterday that the kingship is to have administrative dominion while the priesthood is to have spiritual dominion bring men to God and under the influence of God.

The Children of Israel remained without the kingship until they chose Saul who again failed, and God replaced him with David. David was one of the few examples of men aside Melchizedek the king of Salem who were both kings and at the same time priests   Gen 14.18. David was obviously a king, and he was the only king to have entered the temple and eat bread meant for only the priest and lived, as a priest he wrote several psalms which we read today. Referring to the act of David entering the temple, Jesus said (Mat 12.2-4), David the king ate the bread of Levite despite being a king and the Levites themselves broke the sabbath meaning David was a man foreshadowing the kingdom being both king and priest. You may now understand why Jesus came to sit on the seat of David (Luke 1.32-33) because he was to be king and priest like David to usher in the kingdom. So while David was God’s first choice for Natural Israel as king and Priest, Jesus was that of the Spiritual Israel as king and Priest.

So far we have seen the seed of the kingdom in the old testament and how God has not lost a point ensuring that his will be done on earth. Adam as we saw was the king of the earth before his fall, he was to exercise dominion and at the same time offer worship to God. We can therefore say he was both king and priest as we are meant to be. As we continue our lesson tomorrow, we would be seeing how God brought the reality of the kingdom through Jesus and the great distinction between the old order and the new one. Please spread the word, share the devotional with family and friends and join us tomorrow as we continue our lesson on kingdom invasion. May the Lord grant us light.
