Words of the Ministry:
Yesterday, we saw the way God makes men, we said one of the chief means of making is chastening. Although the flesh hates to be chastened, for us to grow from being children to men, from being babes to sons, from being carnal to spiritual, we must suffer the flesh. Today I like to look at the duties of sons. Just as sons in every family, as sons of God we are also meant to carry out some responsibility which is an indication that we are indeed maturing in life. We saw the example of Jesus at the well in John 4, he said his food was to do the will of the father and finish his work. When we contrast Jesus in John 4 to the carnal believers in Hebrews 5.12-14, we would see the distinction between the children and Jesus the son, while Jesus took responsibility to do things, the babes always wanted things to be done for them.
We can therefore say, one of the indications of maturity is taking responsibility, not waiting for others and not passing blames. From today’s reading, we see Jesus telling Mary Magdalene that he and the disciples are children of God, that by extension refers to us as we are all born of the Spirit, the second passage then says as son we are to show love to those that hate us and be merciful to the unmerciful. That then brings me to a short list on the duties of sons which is:
- Love: Love towards God and towards man: Our love towards God makes us obey him and our love towards man make us reflect the love of God to them be it in our daily activities or gospel preaching. We are to ensure we live holy as that is what pleases God.
- Service: One of the principal reasons for our salvation is to serve our God, we are to worship him, be his ambassadors, extend his kingdom and be his army. We are to contend with the enemy and see to the establishment of his kingdom. To do the aforementioned, it would cost us our money, time, physical strength and other resources.
- Suffer: Again, the matter of suffering comes up, one of the duties of sons in this world is to suffer for God. As we read through the bible, we see several references to the matter of suffering and the glory we would eventually reap, Rom 5.3-4, 1 Pet 5.10, Rom 8.18. 2 Cor 4.17 just to mention a few. In closing I like to quote 2Ti 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
