Theme: Sonship (4)
Memory Verse: Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Topic: The Making of Sons
Today’s Reading: Heb 12:5-8
5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Words of the Ministry:
As we have seen within the week, God has a plan to bring many sons to glory (Heb 2.10), for this reason, God planted Christ as the unique seed to reap a harvest of sons (Jhn 12.24). What we would then realize is that whereas many are satisfied by the fact that they are saved, God’s goal is still not complete as he wants a crop of Sons and not children, to achieve this, just as the unique son, we too must grow and such growth comes not only by prayers and bible studies but by dealings In which case God deals with us and we deal with him. It may come as a surprise to many that even Jesus learnt obedience through sufferings (Heb 5.8), suffering is therefore one of the main instruments of growth which the Lord uses to transform us from being a child to becoming a son, by suffering I don’t mean sickness and poverty but the many trials and persecutions we may encounter, the several no’s to our will and the many not good for you we experience.
Many saints frown at the idea of sufferings, to them God is too good go let his children suffer, they feel God is tantamount to a father Christmas giving them all they desire when they desire and how they desire it, some think God is a trained dog that takes instruction from the owner. Sooner than later as we walk with the Lord, we come to realize that our prayers when answered is not necessarily and ultimately to make us happy although it does rather it to to glorify God and to further conform us to the image of his son. So as the Lord helps us, we see that our prayer request at a certain phase in our lives seem to get less Yes answers unlike when we first began the journey, that is like a child becoming a son and getting several no’s over his old childish desires. Then we are introduced to what is called denying of the flesh and carrying the cross.
From today’s reading, we see that discipline is sign that we are indeed God’s children, that as his children we are becoming sons. The author says its only bastard’s that would not be chastised and ultimately a bastard would never get an inheritance. Therefore, as joint heirs with the Lord, we must be chastised, we must suffer, we must carry our cross, we must deny ourselves and love God with our best love. Such chastening are indications that we are indeed sons, may the Lord grant us light.
