Today’s Reading : Deu 31:12-13

12  Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:

13  And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

Words of the Ministry:

Today we come to the conclusion of the lesson, family devotion and as we do so, it is necessary we comment on one of the central benefits of family devotion which is child training. As we did highlight in previous lessons, the family devotion is not necessarily our personal or private devotion rather it is for the family and as a result, the goal must incorporate child training and in some cases spouse training.

By training, we mean the children have the opportunity not only to be taught by listening but that they are also involved in the program organization, questions and contribution. As our children are given the opportunity to share their experiences, ask questions and give answers, we can use even their responses to further guide them. The heart of man including children is unknown and the easiest way to have a hint of their opinions and thought process is by probing with relevant questions.

The demand to train our children in a Godly way in this evil and perverse generation is not an easy one, it requires a lot of time and effort and we must be willing to spend time with our children.  Children are the reflections of their homes and most characters our children exhibit is from the examples they see their parent exhibit.  For instance, a child brought up by a nagging mother would most likely be intolerant and may end up being a nagging person in future because his mother was the best example he saw while growing. That is why we must be careful with our living and also seizes the opportunity of the family devotion to explain some practical situations in our home to our children and why certain actions were taken with the consequence being either good or bad before God.

From our today’s text, we see God through Moses commanding the people to ensure they not only hear but also learn the fear of God. To hear is one thing but to learn is to train. Our goal must not be to teach so that they hear rather that they learn, such learning comes from doing, our goal must therefore be to organize our meeting in such a way that they would not only hear but also become doers of the things being taught. May the Lord see us through. Please keep in mind our monthly meeting which comes up next week Sunday the 25th of June by 4pm. Please come with family and friends, Christ is our life.
