Topic: Administering a family devotion
Today’s Reading: Deut 11.18-21
18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.
19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:
21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
Words of the Ministry:
Yesterday we looked at some of the challenges of organizing a family devotion and we did outline 3, namely consistency, content and lastly administration, I did say we would comment more on administration in today’s lesson. The matter of administration may be said to be the core of the matter as everything lies on it. By administration, I mean how the meeting is to be organized to ensure that each participant gets the best from it, It is meant to be in line with the overall idea of bringing every family member into the knowledge of God and at the same time preparing them to do same when they come of age and have the opportunity.
To ensure each family members gets the best from the meeting, the coordinator must ensure it is interactive, questions should be thrown at each participant and reasonable time should be given to hear them out, emphasis should not be on good or bad answer rather the organic benefits of the lessons. The younger ones should be encouraged to memorize the memory verse of the day or at least a verse of the bible in a week and by so doing, they would have memorized about 52 verses from different subjects and books in a year. The coordinator should be creative by using colored materials, story books, memory verse flash cards or turning memory verses into songs. He should also give little responsibilities to all participant, by so doing they are not only learning but also being trained, For instance, one person could do the days reading while another takes care of praise, another workshop etc.
As our participants increase and the children come of age, we should also let them organize the meetings under our supervision, by so doing, we are preparing them for leadership and it also gives us an avenue to asses what we have been doing over the years. The family is the bedrock of the society and the family altar is where we can easily learn about the values that would not only make us better Christians but better citizens. Illustrations, materials, and creative scenarios should also be used to convey the thought of the lesson and finally, re-enforcement learning is highly encouraged as participants may easily forget what was previously taught, we should have a system of visiting previous lesson in this wise. As we do all of these, I believe our family altar would grow from strength to strength, shalom.
