Today’s Reading : 1Co 6:19-20
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Words of the Ministry:
This week, we would be considering bible stewardship with particular emphasis on the stewardship of our bodies. The goal of the week’s lesson is to draw our attention to the importance of our bodies to the overall plan of God, our role in preserving our bodies and ensuring it fulfils God’s plan and lastly the consequences of not living according to the dictates of God’s word. The matter of stewardship is not a small matter; A steward in the ancient world was a person who was given the responsibility and authority to rule over the affairs of the household. For example, the patriarch Joseph became a steward over Potiphar’s household: he managed everything in the household and was given the authority to rule over the house (Gen. 39:1–6a) but in this particular sense, our stewardship concerns the management and affairs of our physical bodies which is God’s house (1 Cor 6.16, Jhn 14.23).
As we read the bible, we see several instructions concerning the use of our bodies, for instance we are told to present our body’s holy, guard our heart, guard our tongue, guard our eyes and flee sexual immorality. We come across verses that emphasize that if a part of you would take you to hell cut it off. In the overall lessons, the bible says Jesus is coming for a church that is spotless and without wrinkle. Reading all those instructions, what comes to mind it that God has not given the body to us to use as we deem fit, he is well interested in how our bodies are used and he would reward us based on its use. This then give us a different impression of redemption, that the death of Christ was not just to save us from our guilt and sin, rather it is an investment to which we would account for.
Today’s reading talks about our bodies, it teaches that we have been bought with a price therefore our bodies and Spirit belongs to God. It is expected that as stewards, we then glorify God with our bodies and Spirit. I like us to quickly note that although man is tripartite having a Spirit, Soul and Body, Paul here says we should present our Spirit and body to God in an acceptable manner leaving out the Soul. That is not to say our soul doesn’t belong to God as the bible teaches all Soul is of God (Eze 18.4) rather it is to make us understand that the eventual use of our Spirit and body is determined chiefly by our Soul, the seat of our personality which houses our mind for reasoning and understanding, our will to make choices and our emotion to express our feelings. The Soul is therefore the center of our lesson as where our soul goes, the body follows. Join us within the week as we explore the lesson and please keep in mind our once a moth meeting which come up next week Sunday by 4pm. Shalom.
