Topic: Challenges of organizing family devotion

Today’s Reading: Gal 5:16-17

16  This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17  For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Words of the Ministry:

Yesterday we learnt how to organize a family devotion; we saw the various sections that should be included in a proper family devotion. Today, I would comment on some of the challenges we face in organizing a family devotion. Like every other activities, organizing a consistent and proper devotion is a spiritual sacrifice. It requires a lot of discipline and prayers as the devil fights everything that promotes the agenda of God.

I have been able to identify 3 main areas that affect family devotion.

  1. Consistency: Many families complain about consistency, they say they start their devotions and after a few days, they notice it become really difficult to keep up with having their devotions, they begin to skip some days and eventually they stop. I believe it is really difficult to be consistent with any spiritual service. I also like to say that the problem of consistency is not totally a devil initiated one as we may be the ones contributing to it based on our choices. For some, it is the timing of the family devotion, it may be that it comes too early or late while some; they aren’t really organized with time management. For some adults and children, they sleep very late while in some other cases, conflict among couples make one party continually skip the meeting and that may eventually affect the devotion. Beyond all the aforementioned, to have a sustained family altar, the couple must make it a matter of intense prayer.
  • Content: The content of the lessons or material is another reason why many family devotions programs don’t last. Like we did say yesterday, some families use devotional guides like this while others study from the bible directly. Whichever choice the coordinator chooses, it is very important to have a content that brings enlightenment to the home. Every age group should find some nourishment from the lessons and study. Like I mentioned yesterday, the coordinator is saddled with the responsibility of not only going through the material ahead of the meeting to see if it is good enough for the family, he or she must also meditate on how to apply  it with possible scenarios and examples that would make it beneficial to the family members. It could become boring and members may lose interest if all that is discussed is centered on only matters that affect one age group. It is therefore advised that the coordinator makes enough research about the material, the topic, universal and practical examples that would affect all attendees.
  • Administration: The matter of how to administer the meeting is another major factor to talk about as it goes a long way in determining the success or eventual failure of the family devotion program. May I say that the family devotion is not an apostolic meeting; every member that can contribute to its success should be encouraged either by singing hymns, song or psalms, bible reading, contribution to the teachings and corporate praying should also be encourage. I would comment more on the matter of administering a family devotion program tomorrow, Shalom.
