Words of the Ministry:

Yesterday we emphasized on the several benefits we get at the family altar. Today I like to comment on how the family altar should be organized.  We would be looking at some basic ingredients of a proper family altar. As we keep in mind that the family devotion is not just one of those things we do but a deliberate service to God and to our family, we must do it with the following in mind:

  1. Choose a time that works for all:- The parents must be deliberate about the success of the family altar hence they should pick a time that works for the family especially because it’s not a personal devotion. I like to recommend early in the morning before the children start preparing for school and if possible before they sleep. For this to work, parents must work on proper time management to ensure even the children get enough sleep.
  • Include everyone: Like the name implies it is called a family altar, we must therefore ensure everyone is included, even the little ones, if they can’t contribute to the days lesson, they can sing a hymn, song or recite the memory verse, share an experience, a testimony or at least clap. It is never too early to involve our children.
  • Avoid distraction: Parents or the coordinators should avoid distractions and that is one of the reasons I recommend early hours of the day. We must also ensure we avoid electronic distractions like the mobile phone, television or toys while observing family devotion. As much as possible phones should either be mute or switched off while the television set should be turned off even for the little ones that love cartoons. This would also pass a strong message to our children that what we are doing is not just necessary but is of uttermost importance.
  • Time management: Proper time management is another very important factor to put into consideration, the meeting should not be unnecessarily long as it may become boring. To ensure the meeting is sustained, we must ensure we allocated time in such a way that we can still do our normal chore and the children would still be able to do their daily task while not going late to school.
  • Manage the content: The essence of that early morning or evening gathering is to have devotion unto God; we must not make the mistake of turning it to a time of family argument, amusement, gossip, children rebuke, jokes etc. One of the very common problems with most family time is that the parents or organizer has no particular time schedule for the several things to be done while some don’t even have any content to work on, By content we mean the things we do to ensure time is maximized, the reading, the kind of studies, the goal of the lessons and re-enforcement plan.

Tomorrow we would be looking at what the content of our devotion should be. May the Lord grant us light.
