13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: 14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; 16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. KJV

Words of the Ministry

Today we would be looking at the title, Jesus as the Light of the world. When we mention light, almost immediately the opposite which is darkness comes to mind. While, light suggest the absence of darkness, in this sense what we want to focus on is how Jesus is the light of the world. The bible describing the ministry of Jesus said those that were in darkness saw a great light. Jesus called himself the light of the world because man was in darkness through the fall of man and the spirit of man was in captivity of darkness. In Proverbs we learn that the spirit of man is the candle of the Lord (Pro 20.27), that spirit needed the light of God after the fall, the bible said man fell short of the glory of God ( Rom 3.23), that glory is God’s light. Little wonder the bible refers to the gospel as the glorious gospel ( 2 Cor 4.4) because it brings forth light to lighten every man (Jhn 1.9).

The bible teaches that believers are up against the rulers of darkness of this world ( Eph 6.12), this rulers has held men bound in darkness so much that the bible says the whole world lieth in wickedness(1 Jhn 5.19), that is the reason the Light of the world came for mankind in John 3.16, God gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes should not parish but have everlasting life. The implication is that as man has believed him they would be in the light as he is in the light. Concerning our God, the bible said he dwell in an unapproachable light 1 Thimothy 6.16, it is by the sacrificial work of Christ that we can co-habit with God in our Spirit, in his light.

Jesus in the gospels said he was the light of the world because ever man born of a woman was in darkness. Before Jesus departure, he said we believers are the light of the world, by this he meant through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we can bring light to undo the several works of darkness. So through salvation our spirit is being lighted and we are meant to shine the light of Jesus everywhere we go.  Saints, what a great testimony, Jesus has by his grace given us the power to continue his ministry. Through the light within us, we are to subdue the earth and bring the earth under control. Say this to yourself “I am the Light of the World, through me those bound in darkness would be liberated and experience the great light”, amen.
