Theme: The several Titles of Jesus (3)

Topic: The Son of Man

Memory Verse:     John 6:35

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.  NKJV

Today’s Reading: Dan 7:13-14

13 “I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. 14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed. NKJV

Words of the Ministry

Today we look at another title of Jesus as the son of man. The phrase “son of “is commonly used in the bible to denote descendant of or son of a person,  atimes it is used for a race as the sons of Israel or a group of persons like the sons of the prophet so looking superficially at this term son of man, it may just denote the humanity of Jesus or one could say it Jesus’ way of stating his humanity. Jesus used the term son of man in reference to himself about 69 times in the synoptic gospels. We would notice that while demons and the devil severally referred to him as the son of God in the synoptic gospel, they never for once called him the son of man as that had a great meaning to them as it would naturally spell their doom and mean they admit their defeat that a man can live above temptation and have dominion over them. The matter between mankind and the devil is traceable to Genesis 3 and admitting Jesus was the son of man was to admit to the prophesy of the son of the woman in Genesis 3.

So we see that while demons never wanted to acknowledge him as the son of man the Pharisees on the other hand had a problem with him as the son of God. But Jesus chose rather to be identified with man as the son of man.  To be the son of man therefore meant he was a man but beyond that he was divine as the prophesy of Daniel suggests. From Todays reading, we see a prophesy of the son of man which later was to be fulfilled in Jesus because as the prophesy stated all authority has been given to Jesus (Mat 28.18), he received all glory (Jhn 17.24), He received all power sitting at the right hand of the father (Heb 1.3), He has an ever expanding kingdom (Rev 7.9) and his kingdom would never pass away (Heb 11.15). We can therefore see that although the term son of man refers to mankind, Jesus as the son of man referred to both his humanity and divinity as further emphasized by Stephen in Acts 7.56

Saints, Jesus was fully God and at the same time he was fully man, Theologians refer to this as the hypostatic union. As man he knows our pains and suffering, he knows our several temptations and needs, as man he remains our high priest before God and as man he was qualified to die for mankind. As God he has everything under control, he cannot be caught unaware concerning our several trials. He turns things around to our favor even when we don’t know it. He said we should ask so that our joy may be full. Saints we have Jesus not just as God the son but God the man. May the Lord grant us light, amen.
