Topic: The Reality of Anger
Today’s Reading: Mar 3:3-5
3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. —
5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other
Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Mat 5:23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
Mat 5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Words of the Ministry:
Today we would be looking at the reality of anger, from yesterday’s lesson we learnt that anger is common to all and that even children get angry by default, we also saw that anger could be sinful and righteous and that sinful anger is exhibited as a work of the flesh that can deny us the kingdom of God. Anger as an emotion is indeed common to all, as we can see from todays reading, Jesus was angry with the Pharisees that questioned his healing of a paralyzed man, the bible said Jesus was grieved because of the hardness of their heart. Also in other passages like John 2.13-17, we see Jesus cleansing the temple, overturning the table of money changers. We can therefore say even Jesus got angry, so anger in itself is not a sin.
Having seen that man gets angry, the question we then need to ask ourselves is what kind of anger do you exhibit? is it sinful anger or righteous anger. As we study trough scriptures, we realize that anger is not a small matter before God. Jesus teaching on anger in Mat 5.21-23 compared killing a brother to getting angry with a brother for not serious reason, he said both acts have the same consequence of being brought to judgement. Some may say I did not kill anyone, I just expressed an uncontrolled anger, here Jesus is saying you are as guilty as a killer. To further clarify his point, Jesus went on to say using strong words when angry, words like raca which means worthless person or fool puts you in danger of the council or hell fire. We would notice that Jesus made a switch describing what anger entaisl as some may argue that I wasn’t angry I just used some negative words on him or her, Jesus is saying such action born of anger would lead to hell.
Dear saint, we must not pamper sin, to have victory over the works of the flesh, we must see it as God sees it. Many saints today used negative words against their spouses, children, staff, neighbors, colleagues or customers all in the name of anger. Thay claim they were angry and had to say their mind, Jesus says, you are guilty of hell except you repent There is no justification for that, we must see anger as the enemy of our soul. Anger is a killer, a destroyer of good things, it destroys reputation, homes, churches and communities. From our reading, Jesus said, if you have a gift to offer to God and you know that there is a matter between you and another person as a result of anger, drop your gift and reconcile with the person first before coming back to give the offering. In other words, anger also stains our offerings and makes it unacceptable to God. Isn’t it funny how many us of take light what God condemns, may the Lord grant us light.
