Words of the Ministry
Today as we continue on the theme, journeying with Jesus, we come to another very important point which is losing every extra weight. After being sure our goals and aspiration for the new year is of God and that we are not being presumptuous, we move to the second phase of counting the cost, telling ourselves the truth of what we must do and stop doing to see to the actualization of our goals. Immediately we realize the cost to be paid, we don’t just go embarking on the goal rather we start with the next phase which is laying aside every extra weight. This may be one of the most difficult part in the journey as this would cost us some things both internally and externally. If our counting the cost is done sincerely, we would even realize that majority of the price we must pay is actually internal.
The bible in so many ways admonish us in this light. In Hebrews 12.1, the author admonishes believers to lay aside every weight that easily besets us. Keep in mind that those goals and aspirations although may benefit you more in the physical, it is the Lords will as we earlier learnt, so it’s not just your goals but the Lord’s as you have been bought with a price. Your counting the cost and laying aside every weight is therefore a kingdom sacrifice to further the will of God on earth. Paul speaking along the same line in 1 Corinthians 9.24-26 said we shouldn’t run aimlessly nor fight likes someone beating the air. That your goal for the year is the prize that has been set, to win it, unlike others you must run according to the rules, laying aside every weight.
Today’s reading further shed light on the matter as the master told a would-be disciple, a man who had a goal of following the Lord wherever he went to leave his father’s burial, that he should let the dead bury the dead. To this man, that repeated burial was his weight pulling him back for his God given burden. So likewise, was the second man, he said he wanted to follow the master after he goes to bid his family good bye and the Lord said anyone who has started on a journey and looks back is not worthy of him. Both persons had an extra weight of family love and self-love. They wanted to be in the good book of their family and also have a good reputation with men. Saints the matter of weight is mostly internal as the external factors like wrong friend can be easily avoided. To many their weight is gluttony, while some it is self-love, other live to impress their friend while a great majority live beyond their means, passing from debt to debt. Some believers weight is their tongue while others it is their sexual urge. Many believers weight is a wrong attitude of not being appreciative, some cant apologize for their wrong doing. The Lord, giving a metaphor said if your eye or hand would lead you astray cut it off. It is time to cut off that extra weight delaying or stopping your forward progress, May the Lord grant us light.
