Theme: Journeying with Jesus (2)

Topic: Beware of presumption

Memory Verse for the week: Rev 22:13

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. NKJV

Today’s Reading: Luke 2.43-49

Luk 2:43  And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. Luk 2:44  But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. Luk 2:45  And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. Luk 2:46  And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. Luk 2:47  And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. Luk 2:48  And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. Luk 2:49  And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

Words of the Ministry

Saints, today we come to day two of our theme, journeying with Jesus, we did highlight the danger in making our plans without him, stating that is the reason many never get to their destination. We did also say that human strength is limited and so is our knowledge, hence the need to take certain precautions to ensure we maximize the benefits of the year. Today I would look at the first pit fall that affects many and that is presumption, assuming that their said endeavor, their set goal and ambition is certainly the will of God while it isn’t. This happens to be one of the main problems in the church, believers engage in several activities motivated by the flesh hoping to get God involved in the middle of the journey, when they eventually crash land, they then realize that they have set the horse before the cart.

From today’s reading, we see the earthly parents of Jesus after celebrating the Passover, they embarked on a journey to their station as usual assuming the Lord was with them on that trip, the account said they had gone a whole  day before realizing he wasn’t with them, they then assumed he must be with their friends and again, he wasn’t here, eventually after 3 days, they had to go back to where they were coming from before they found the Lord in the temple reasoning with scholars. Here is the picture of our past and we must be careful not to do the same. Jesus asked Peter to join him as he walked on the sea (Mat 14.29-32) and when the wind blew Peter was afraid and began to sink, he called on the Lord and he was delivered. From Peters story we see an example of a man that acted according to instruction and found help in time of need.

Saints, the response of Jesus to Mary and Joseph is quite instructing. He said he must be about his father’s business. This is to reaffirm that Christ is only involved in the will of God. We can’t fast God into our own ideas or desires, he is our God and also our Lord. His will must be done on earth as it is done in heaven. Man can’t initiate anything outside the will of God and expect his absolute support regardless of how people rate the plan. Check while it is day, that decision to travel, change a job, get married, invest in certain business, buy certain stock, start a building project for the church etc. Is the Lord in with you or are you being presumptuous? Are you assuming that since certain events happened last year and year before, God must be in your plan. Sit back and seek God, the year is still young, may the Lord grant us light.
