Theme: Life Lessons from Saul (2)
Memory Verse: 1Co 10:12 So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall. NET
Topic: Great qualities in the life of Saul (1)
Today’s Reading: 1Sa 9:15-16
15 Now the day before Saul arrived, the LORD had told Samuel:
16 “At this time tomorrow I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin. You must consecrate him as a leader over my people Israel. He will save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked with favor on my people. Their cry has reached me!”
1Sa 9:21 Saul replied, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the smallest of Israel’s tribes, and is not my family clan the smallest of all the clans in the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you speak to me in this way?”
Words of the Ministry:
Yesterday we saw how the children of Israel rejected God as their King and severally murmured against Samuel saying they needed a king like the neighboring nations. This made God choose a man called Saul as king for then to rule over the affairs of Israel. I like us to look at some of the Godly Characters that Saul had that made him stand out.
As we read the account of Saul, we notice the following>
- He was a faithful and hardworking young man, who was committed to work as we see in 1 Sam 9.3-4 when his father asked him to go look for missing donkey’s, he went all out to search for them. That is one of the qualities that stood him out.
- He was full of Godly wisdom, the account in 1 Sam 9.5 shows that when he couldn’t find the donkeys, he suggested they go back home as his father would now be worried about him. Saul was indeed a wise and considerate man.
- Saul was a man who understood how to honor people and in this case God’s servants. We would notice that when his servant suggested they go see the prophet Samuel, Saul said it would only be proper they go to see the prophet with a gift to honor him.
- In 1 Sam 9.21, we see the humility of Saul. When Samuel informed him, he was chosen of God to lead Israel, Saul replied he was but from the last tribe of Israel, a Benjaminite and from the least clam in that tribe. Here we see him humility, despite his father’s wealth, he was unassuming.
- In 1 Sam 10.14-16, again we see another unique quality in the life of Saul, when his uncle asked him about his journey in search of the donkeys, Saul told him about his encounter with Samuel and the prophecy the donkey would have been found but never mentioned that he was chosen to be king. Here we see a man that didn’t brag or boast, He could also tame his tongue.
Dear saints, as we read the account of Saul, we can see that it was not just a coincidence that God chose him to be king rather it was because he had some qualities of leadership also. Many today want to be used by God in various positions in life but they suffer from character bankruptcy. It is not enough to be a Christian; we must imbibe the qualities of Christ to rise in this kingdom. May the Lord grant us light. Join us tomorrow as we look at some other qualities in the life of Saul. Shalom.
