Life Capsule for Today                                                  24th July 2024

Theme: Character and Destiny (4)

Topic: The evil of trusting in riches

Memory Verse for the week: 1Co 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Today’s Reading:  Mat 19.21-24

21  Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

22  But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

23  Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

24  And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Words of the Ministry

We have seen three bible figures and their exemplary characters that helped propel them into their God designed destinies. Today I would be considering a negative case of a rich young man who because of his trust in riches could not enter his actual destiny. The account in Mathew 19.16-24 shows that the young man kept the Law from his youth as he told Jesus he has kept the list of the 10 commandments. From the story of this man, we see the fulfillment of God promises to those that kept the law that God would indeed bless their bread and wine and the young man was blessed (Deut 28.1-13) but as Jesus probed him, we then see a gap in his heart, he wasn’t keeping the first commandment which was to love God with all his heart. The young man was obedient to the Law because of his cares for riches. The young man trusted in riches at his expense of the kingdom. The bible said he left sorrowful.

One of the conditions for entering our actual destiny which is to be with God in eternity future is the new birth, The new birth as Jesus said also has a price which is to lose all to gain the kingdom. In Mat 19.29, Jesus said those that have lost the things of this world would get it hundred-fold with persecution. That shows us that while we may lose something in our walk with the Lord, we would later gain it in his way and time and also gain eternity. The trust in money and earthly riches which include properties, connections, name, certificates etc has denied many from entering their destinies. Many are not saved today because of their love for riches while some saints are also not growing in life because they trust in riches.

Many believers are like this rich young man, they feel happy and are active today because of earthly riches, they believe being a Christian is an insurance policy for earthly riches. they later get frustrated in their journey with God as their love for money has blinded their eyes. Many ministries have lost their vision because of this same love and trust in riches, they have left their messages in pursuit of money, many open branches in several places both home and abroad because of the multiplicity of income, It is a shame that believers marry wrong, work in wrong places, engage in fraudulent transactions, gossip, murmur and backbite all for riches. Jesus said we can’t serve God and mammon. We must lay our treasures in heaven by giving our heart to God and by so doing we would enter into our spiritual purpose and destiny as where your treasure is, there would your heart be also. May the Lord grant us light. Join us this Sunday by 4pm for our monthly Peniel encounter with the theme Goshen.
