1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Words of the Ministry
This week we considered the several reasons to believe we are saved, we saw the external witness of the word, the internal witnesses of the Holy Spirit, the love for the brethren, the rebuke of a living conscience and the desire for spiritual milk. We said all the aforementioned is to reassure us that indeed we are saved. Today I like to further encourage us to walk consistently of our testimony. I like us to look into today’s reading as it would further help our resolve to focus on our journey with Jesus.
The author of Hebrews said seeing we have a great cloud of witnesses, a large number of saints who have lived before us with such testimony of pleasing God, we should like them lay aside every weight and sin that easily beset us and run the race before us with patience. That is to say yes there is a race ahead of us and we must run the race with patience but while doing that, we must ensure we run laying aside the weight of self-condemnation, disobedience and every other sin we seem to easily fall into. That is a call to live conscious of the spirit.
The key to progress from our today study is to look away unto Jesus, who is both the author and the finisher of our faith, the book of Jude 1.24 says he is able to keep us from falling. As we look unto him, we can be sure to overcome the several temptations of the devil, the sins that easily beset us and consequently we live an overcoming life daily.
Dear saints, don’t be discouraged by the several rough roads you encounter along the journey, same were the experiences of the cloud of witnesses, many had several reasons to deny their faith or doubt their believe but as the book of Mathew says, he is with us always (Mat 28.20). We must never lose sight of this truth, the Lord our shepherd is with us and would navigate us through until we get to our destination of glory. May the Lord grant us light.
