Today’s Topic: Addressing errors on the gift of Tongues
Today’s Reading: Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
Words of the Ministry:
Today we would be considering some common misconceptions concerning the gift of tongue which are contrary to scriptures. We see a lot of activities going on today contrary to the pattern as taught in the bible hence the need to clarify the matter. We have seen the importance of tongues over the week, we have also learnt that the gift is still active today and open to as many as the Lord shall call and are willing to receive it. One of the errors I have personally noticed is the idea that one could be taught by repeating words or phrases. It is an error and anyone that started speaking in tongues that way is not operating the Holy Spirit gift of tongues but that from the human soul.
The second error that is common is that people believe the holy spirit controls the extent to which they speak in tongues or even the flow. We have seen that is contrary to scripture as Paul severally said even concerning the public use of tongues, if there is no interpreter keep quiet (1 Cor 14.18) and he further said he speaks it as he wills in the secret to confirm that we control the flow even if it’s a message from God. The bible particularly teaches also that the Spirit of a prophet is subject to him (1 Cor 14.32-22), the Holy Spirit therefore doesn’t force us to operate in any gift Like many denominations teach rather demons and environmental spirits do.
The third most common error is that people teach if a man does not speak in tongues he is not baptized in the Holy Spirit, that’s not true as tongues is one of the fruits of Holy Spirit baptism as seen in 1 Cor 12.6-11, Moreso as we study the bible, we see that Peter referenced Joel 2.28 as being fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, reading through the list, we would notice even tongues was not listed. Lastly many say not all would speak in tongues because the bible in 1 Cor 12.30 asks if all speak in tongues. The issue with that argument is that it is too narrow as the bible also encourages those without it to desire spiritual gifts which include tongues (1 Cor 14.1). In addition, the bible teaches it’s a means of communicating with God (1 Cor. 14.2) and a means of building up our faith (Jud 1.20) which is highly encouraged.
Dear saints, the above is an addition to some of the errors we saw in the course of the weeks lessons which include caseation of the gift of tongues, tongues only being human language understood by many, the gift being limited to the apostles and their immediate disciples. Having considered the above points, I believe many would be free from the common misconceptions and hindrances and would have learnt to appreciate the gift of tongues as we would be considering how to receive the gift tomorrow, shalom.
