Memory Verse: Mark 16.17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Today’s Topic: Receiving the Gift of Tongues

Today’s Reading: Act 19:1  And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

Act 19:2  He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

Act 19:3  And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

Act 19:4  Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Act 19:5  When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Act 19:6  And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied

 Words of the Ministry:

We have within the week seen the importance of the Holy Spirit gift of tongues, we also did emphasize on the common misconceptions concerning the gift of tongues. Although our burden is not to discuss how to be born again or baptized in the Holy Spirit, we would comment a little on them because the gift of tongues could also be received when we have either experience as we would be learning today. The gift of tongues is one of the several gifts of the Holy Spirit and he generally distributes as he will 1 Cor 12.4-11 but the bible also teaches that we can ask for anything from God including Spiritual gifts (Mat 7.7-8, 1 Cor 12.31).

The most common way to receive the gift of tongues is by laying on of hands (1 Thim 4.14-15, Act 19.1-6), we may have noticed that in our today’s reading, they received the Holy Spirit and they spoke in tongues, we can therefore say one of the ways we receive the gift of tongues is to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, although like we said, the gift we may receive when baptized in the Holy Spirit is not limited to tongues as we saw that many also prophesied. Tongues being an obvious expression than the gift of faith or the gift of miracles could be the reason why it commonly occurs.

The bible also teaches that believers can receive any gift by faith and asking in prayers. Many saints have received the gift of tongues by asking in faith in prayers (Luk 11.13) and like any other gift, the presence of any spiritual gift is firstly to indicate the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the impartation of that particular gift as all true gifts comes from the Holy Spirit. I also like to say its possible an individual receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the gift of tongues at salvation (Acts 10.44-46) like in the case of Cornelius and his household, although I believe being the first gentile family to be saved, God used that event to further prove to Peter that they which were unclean have become sons of God also following his reaction in his previous revelation (Acts 10.9-18).

Dear saints, have you been saved without the Holy Spirit baptism or the gift of tongues? Just as we have learnt, you can ask God for it in faith or ask any mature believer operating same gift to impact same by laying hands on you. If you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit but don’t speak in tongues, you can also ask in prayer or seek impartation. I must again emphasize that the prove of Holy Spirit baptism is power for service and not necessarily tongue. A person could therefore be baptized without speaking in tongues, such a person may prophesy or exercise any other spiritual gift of power which is primarily for service. May the Lord grant us light.
