Memory Verse: Mark 16.17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Today’s Reading: Tongues as signs

Today’s Reading: 1Co 14:21-22

21  In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

22  Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

 Words of the Ministry:

This week we would be considering the matter of tongues as taught in the bible. We would have noticed the several debates going on for and against this subject so much that many get confused. The first point I like to emphasize is that tongue is a sign to the unbelievers as our today’s reading suggests. One may then ask how is tongues a sign to the unsaved as they would most likely not understand what is being said or even feel the person speaking in tongues is speaking gibberish. That then brings us to the subject of the uses of tongues which are at least two categories as the bible teaches namely the public use of tongues and the private use of tongues.

The public use of tongue could be classified further as tongues of men which would not necessarily need the gift of interpretation of tongues in most cases or the tongues of angels (1 Cor 13.11) which would require or need the gift of interpretation of tongues to covey the thought to the audience (1 Cor 14.27-28). We see a typical example of tongues as a sign in the book of Acts 2.4-6 here the disciples waiting in the upper room began to speak the tongue of the men who came from different nations of the earth. The disciples praised God in an unlearned tongue, that got the attention of the people and brought them to salvation. In this situation, there was no need for an interpreter or the gift of the interpretation of tongues as the message was in the language of the listener and the listener was the target audience.

Dear saints, we need to trust God for the full measure of the gift of tongues as it would not only help our private prayer life as we would be learning within the week but also help in the work of evangelism. We may have noticed that the public use of tongues as language of men like the case in Acts 2 is not a comm0n occurrence in our days because many don’t either expect it or understand it. There have been many missionary campaigns in history where an evangelist goes to a foreign land and through the power of the supernatural gift of tongue spoke the language of the people to communicate the message of the gospel. We may then see that a lot could be achieved as we maximize the power of this gift which many try to play down because they don’t understand its working. Join us within the week as we explore the subject in details. Christ is our life
