Theme: Things to leave behind (01)

Memory Verse for the Week: Php 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

Topic: The Weight of Sin

Today’s Reading: Heb 12:1-2

1  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Words of the Ministry:

Saints, this week, we would be considering the theme, things to leave behind, as we embark on our life long Christian journey, we would eventually realize that although we are on the path and on the race, a number of matters tend to slow us down and many believers unconsciously have not taken deliberate steps to leave them behind. The author of Hebrew says we should run with patience. That suggests that we have a race ahead of us and it requires urgency hence the need to run but while running, it must be done patiently taking care of the weights attached to our lives.

As we would be seeing within the week, I would take some time to highlight some of the weights unconsciously attached to many saints. I like to start by highlighting the weight of sin. The bible teaches that for the believer, sin shall no longer have dominion over us because we are no more under the law but grace (Rom 6.14). In other words, by virtue of the new birth and the working of the Holy Spirit in and through us, we are expected to live a life free from the dominion of sin. By this we don’t not mean that a Christian can never sin rather we mean that a Christian now has the power to overcome sin through the person of the Holy Spirit within us.

Many believers still struggle with sin as a weight trying to overcome it by themselves by making resolutions and following some self-help programs, unfortunately they fail because by strength no man can prevail over sin (Rom 7.24). Jesus in the gospels made a call to those tired of carrying their heavy load of sin that he would give them rest. Many today are finding the Christian walk hard because of the matter of sin (Mat 11.28). What they have not settled is that not only has Christ taken our Judgment before God, he has also come to live in us (Gal 2.20) and as we acknowledge his supremacy over the flesh, we would live an overcoming life. Should you be struggling with sin or a character weakness, call on Jesus today for help and ask him to express his victory through you as he lives to be our advocate with the father (1 Jhn 2.1). May the Lord grant us light
