Words of the Ministry

Today we come to the fourth of the beatitudes, we have seen that the Lord deliberately arranged it in a chronological order. First it was being poor in the spirit, to have nothing but God in our spirit and then blessed are those that mourn, what that means is to suffer heart break in this world of sin, to bear the loss of the world to gain Jesus, then the blessedness of the meek is to be submissive to God’s will and be willing to lose our earthly right for the Lords sake. Today the Kingdom people still from a spiritual perspective are those that hunger and thirst, not after the good things of this world or because of the good things the world can offer rather they hunger and thirst after righteousness. So, the spiritual condition of a Christian is being viewed from his spirit is said to be poor in the spirit, and in his soul, he is submissive to God with his will, the state of his emotion is mourning and he hungers and thirst after righteousness in his mind.

What is righteousness, it is to keep doing and choosing right according to God’s standard, it starts with our objective righteousness, which is bestowed on us at Salvation, God declares us righteous but beyond that, we also need a subjective righteousness, a deliberate desire and pursuit to do the will of God, to purge ourselves of the stain of this world.  To be hungry and thirsty after righteousness is wanting to live according to God instead of the world. It is to thirst after doing the right thing before God like a man that has walked several meters in the desert seeking to quench his thirst. It is a burning desire to be intimate with God. An ever-increasing quest to serve God.  We must like David say “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is Ps 63:1. Jesus is described as the living water, he is the one that quenches our thirst, we seek him to quench our thirst, he is the real bread, the bread of life, we must feast on him to be satisfied.

So we see a great contrast between what many believe the new birth is, many think on being saved, you have to hunger and thirst to meet your earthly needs, we see Christians wanting to catch up with the world, they see the unbelievers as a standard and a measure, they want to impress them and they see earthly possessions as a testimony to share instead of their transformed life as a result of walking with the Lord, God has promised to fill our thirst for righteousness as such thirst can never be too much but he never promised to feel our wants as most are just to satisfy the flesh. A bigger accommodation, car, job. position, worldly ambition etc. All are good and God meets such needs according to his will, but our thirst should not be after them but God else we would be the most miserable among men. What do you thirst after, righteousness or the world? in the pursuit of the world, no man can be satisfied but God himself has promised to fill us if we thirst after him, may the Lord help our hearts.
