Words of the Ministry:

Halleluiah, this week we have looked at the subject of Godly parenting, we did emphasis the benefit of the wonderful gift of children as it is a reward and a means of meeting God’s need. We stated that to get the most of our children, we need to create time, be a proper example, use the rod and discipline if need be, and it is necessary we pray passionately for them. Today is the last day of the week and we intend to look at another very important factor in parenting which is called moderation. All that we have learnt must be done in moderation else we may not get the most of our sacrifices. While many of us love the idea of discipline, talking to our children, overlooking some offences, we must do all with moderation. We need to realize our children are humans and they are growing. Whatever approach we use to guide a 5-year-old may not work with a 15-year-old. As the children grow in understanding and emotion, we need to relate with them also trusting their judgment and actions. A continuously suspicious parent would overtime raise a rebellious child.

Parents must know when to react, over look, comment and rebuke, there are times that your children just need guidance, their negative experiences is good atimes, we must not be over protective else they may find it difficult to socialize. Our actions and inactions affects them psychologically. When as a parent, you want to dictate the life of your children not giving them a right of choice or expression (Col 3.21). You force your opinion on them and they don’t ever have a right to choose otherwise. If the child in question is a male, he may find it difficult to socialize as he has a crooked view of the worlds and when he does marry, he may be a very difficult man to live with as he doesn’t understand compromise, he would want to force his views on his wife.  A girl child brought up in such home would either live a timid life even in marriage not being able to express herself or be a bossy wife, commanding the husband and insisting on her position without compromise. So we see how terrible bad parenting can be. If those bad qualities are not checked in the second generation, it moves to the third and even the fourth, before you know it, it would be said that the family is under a curse as no one can marry from their linage all due to poor parenting.

Another issue I have observed is comparism, parents love to compare their children with others, while it is not totally bad, we must do that also with moderation as they are different personalities with different paths in life, some children are smarter with academics while some are better with sports, music or human relations. we must learn to appreciate their strength, atimes overlook their weakness, encourage them if need be to do better as we pray for them. A little caveat for parents, there is a difference between obedience and submission. Children are to be submissive to their parents but not commanded to obey all they say. The bible is clear on the subject of obedience; God expects children to obey their parents in the lord, in other words, children may not obey parents if the demand is outside the Lord. I see some domineering parents that are overzealous, even concerning marriage, they like to choose for their children, threatening if they don’t succumb to them it is a sin, far from it, they are bound to obey you only in the lord when you go outside the lord to force your choice of marriage partner, traditional rights, financial request etc, they are not bound to obey you (Eph 6.4).
