31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. NIV

Matt 4:1-4

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” NIV

Words of the Ministry:

As we look at how to eat the Lord, we come to another aspect today as exemplified by our Lord himself. The background to today’s first text was that Jesus was hungry and sent his disciples to get him food while he ministered to a certain Samaritan woman by the well. The conversation was lengthy, and it took some time for the disciples to return. Upon their return, they offered Jesus the food they had bought, and he answered saying he was satisfied having eaten, the disciples were surprised reasoning who gave him food, but he later explained that his food was to do the will of his father and finish his work. The second text is about the temptation of Jesus when the tempter the devil came asking him to turn stones to bread, but Jesus answered man shall not live by bread alone but by every word from the mouth of God.

As we consider both scriptures, we see the importance of eating the Lord who is the word, Jesus in John 4 was saying doing the will of God was food. It was a kind of nourishment needed not just for the body but the Spirit. He meant his act of passing through Samaria in obedience, sharing the gospel to the woman and getting the whole village to hear the gospel gave satisfaction to his Spirit. It renewed his energy and strengthened his inner man. In Mathew 4, again he told the devil, food is good, but we are not meant to live by the power of natural food alone. We are not living a full life If our spirit is staved and by implication if we don’t receive enough of God’s word and obey them.  So, to eat the lord is not just to learn scripture, read them or memories them rather it is to read, learn and obey them. It is to act according to biblical instructions even when it is not convenient, it is to choose God over our natural appetite. It is to suffer hunger to groom our spirit man.

Dear saints, daily, we are offered a choice to eat the Lord over natural bread, the devil comes asking that we choose bread over the lord, our flesh naturally prefers to eat bread which is human principles and wisdom to eating the Lord which is to obey and do the word and its teachings. We like to eat bread when we are persecuted or in need. Our flesh cries out for bread and we are careless about what the Spirit within us is saying. For us to eat the Lord, we must ensure that we not only read to understand and feed our mind, we must also act in obedience to the word we are reading, it mean we must deny our bodies, the flesh and the self to feed our Spirit just as Jesus did on the mount of temptation and in Samaria, in the long run, we would have life eternal, we would grow in stature being able to withstand the fiery darts of the enemy. May God grant us light.
