Theme: Christ the bread of Life (5)
Memory Verse: John 6:58
58 This is the bread which came down from heaven — not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” NKJV
Topic: Eating the Lord (2)
Today’s Reading: Matt 15:21-28
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.” 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. NIV
Words of the Ministry:
Today we want to consider how to eat the lord to get the most from him. Keep in mind that from our previous lessons, we saw the Lord making a counteroffer to the natural bread seeking multitude. From the text above we see a typical example of a woman who eventually ate the lord. The account said she approach the Lord with a high title of the son of David seeking that the Lord would heal her daughter but the Lord ignored her seeing she was a Canaanite, not being of the household of Israel, she had no right to use the title, thou son of David., after some amount of persistence, the Lord replied saying you cannot give the children bread to Dog. The Lord again making her understand the ground of her request is wrong as he was then sent to the household of Israel. The woman never got angry but went on to rephrase her request saying even dogs eat of the crumbs under the table.
The response immediately suggests two things. First, the woman wanted her daughter healed but the Lord said the solution is not healing but eating and secondly, the woman saw the Lord as to be worshiped being the great son of David but the Lord rather presented himself as children bread. Not only does she need to eat, the bread is accessible to the little ones but unfortunately, she was a Canaanite. As a Canaanite, the woman said even the dogs eat of the crumbs. The Lord regarded her statement as faith and her daughter was delivered from the devils. We see the Lord going from being bread to little crumbs accessible to man. Our Lord’s desire is for us to eat him. We are used to the concept of worship and doing a lot of glorious deeds but what the Lord wants from us is nothing but eating. When we are sick, have a difficult partner, face difficulty in the office, business or with our children, we should not ask the Lord for a quick fix rather we should eat him more.
The implication of we eating him is to take him by his word for our organic growth, the challenges we face at various times in our lives is an expression of hunger in our inner being. It could be likened to the prodigal son whose garment was changed but he was still hungry so his father asked the best ram be killed for him, today as we face difficult challenges, we should not look for a quick fix, we need to eat the Lord even in our challenges, take him by his word and allow him to groom us. We pray the word, we listen to the word and we patiently pay the price. In the long run, we would have become more like him as those various trials is to build us to become like him in life and nature. By eating the Lord, our inner man gets strengthened. We must like Paul accept the grace of God as food or succor to our thorn. Instead of complaining, we must see it as an avenue to grow in life, it is by doing so that we eat the Lord.
