Theme: The Prayer Life of Elijah (6)
Memory Verse: 1 Thess 5:17
17 pray without ceasing, NKJV
Topic: Elijah prepared the altar
Today’s Reading: 1 Kings 18:30-33
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Israel shall be your name.” 32 Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said, “Fill four water pots with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood.” NKJV
Words of the Ministry:
Saints we have spent considerable time on the prayer life of Elijah, we have seen how persistent Elijah was as a man of prayer. We learnt that Elijah prayed big prayers which were according to God’s will. His proclamations never fell to the ground because aside being the will of God, Elijah followed up with intensive prayers. One could easily conclude that prayer was the actual ministry of Elijah. Although Elijah was in the minority, hated by the king, queen and the false prophets of Baal, he was a terror to the kingdom of Israel both day and night as his declarations made a significant impact that resonated the entire nation.
Yesterday, we saw how Elijah went all out in warfare against the enemies of Jehovah, he made sure none escaped the wrath of God. While we celebrate the power of Elijah’s prayer and the impact it made on the people, on Ahab and on Jezebel, I like us to consider an underlying process that preceded the miracle of fire, Before Elijah’s prayer brought down fire, today’s reading said he did some things worthy of consideration. First, he asked that the children of Israel bring 12 stones representing the tribes of Israel, with this stones he built an altar and told the children of Israel that Israel shall be your name. The implication of reminding the Israelites their name is not a small thing as Baal and Ball worship has made many lost their real identity, fear of Jezebel and suffering has made many choose a different name. Again the bible said he repaired the altar for the children of Israel as that day’s contest was a contest to deliver them from the demon called Baal and to liberate them from the clutches of false prophets.
Saints, the matter before us is not a small matter, to have power in prayer like Elijah, to deliver those around us with prayer like the prophet, we must have learnt how to prepare our altar and theirs, we must learn to remind ourselves what the Lord calls us, what he said concerning us, that is our testimony. The bible admonishes us to present ourselves a living sacrifice (Rom 12.1), our bodies is a sacrifice and our hearts must be a living altar (1 Cor 6.19-20) prepared for an encounter, we must remind ourselves what the word says concerning us, the bible said they overcame by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimonies (Rev 12.11), the word of our testimony is what God says concerning you and not what the devil is trying to make you. For them Israel was their name, they were a prince with God, for you, what does the bible say, you are more than a conqueror, you are born of God, your old man is crucified, you have been blessed with all spiritual blessing etc. For us to bring fire down, our alter must be repaired and we must learn to rehearse our name, may the Lord grant us light.
