17 pray without ceasing, NKJV
Topic: Elijah went all out into warfare
Today’s Reading: 1 Kings 18:38-40
38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said,”The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” 40 And Elijah said to them,”Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there. NKJV
Words of the Ministry:
Yesterday, we learnt that Prophet Elijah prayed God centered prayers, his goal was to see the kingdom of God on earth, to ensure the heart of the people who have been turned to the false god Baal have a genuine encounter with the true God. We saw the content of his prayers being about God, his kingdom and righteousness among the people. Elijah never wanted to glorify himself neither was he doing anything by mere zeal. Today we want to further consider the prayer that brought fire from heaven and the conclusion of that event.
Old testament stories are like paintings, allegories and types that we may need to interpret in the light of the new covenant to gain maximum insight. Keep in mind the goal of the prophet was to ensure the heart of the people were turned back to God hence the fire from heaven contest. Eventually Elijah won the contest, the people again believed in Jehovah but there was yet another problem. The prophets of Baal were still alive and with them, alive, they could still change the heart of the people over time. So while the people jubilated that Elijah has disgraced Baal and his prophets, Elijah wanted an end to the power that drew men to sin, he wanted to terminate the problem from its roots.
Elijah in the 40th verse said, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there. Saints that is what our praying should be, not only should we rejoice that men are saved but we must go further to destroy the kingdom of darkness. The system that empowers sin, our praying should be such that shuts down brothel, beer parlous, tobacco companies etc. Our prayer should be such prayers that change evil government officials and government policies, our prayers should be such that make shrines and false churches empty and lose patronage. Our prayers must be such that puts the enemy permanently under our feet in our schools, families and offices. That is the meaning of the kingdom coming, that is the implication of the true heartfelt praying. May God grant us light.
