Topic: The doctrine of sonship
Today’s Reading: Rom 8:12-17
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Words of the Ministry:
This week we would be considering the matter of sonship. I like to start by saying God’s goal in eternity past is to raise many sons in glory, that we would see all through scriptures, either as we read the account in Genesis 1, the gospel or even the epistles. Regardless of we being male or female, God has destined believers to be his sons and by sons we mean God as their source, so male or female we are to be traced back to him in our choices and living. As we read in today’s reading, we see sonship being a matter of leading so God’s goal was that he would be our guide, leading us all through our Christian walk, that is the meaning of sonship.
The book of Roman 8 introduces three main matters concerning our adoption, in verse 16 we see that we are children of God because the Spirit of God bears witness with our spirit, that is what happens at salvation, in verse 14 we see the Spirit now leading the believer, that is sonship, on the one hand, every believer is a child of God but God’s goal is that we become mature, being led by his Spirit to become sons, the third matter in that passage is that of we as heir of God, joint heirs with Christ, so we see that God has destined us to be joint heirs having the same benefits with Jesus Christ his first born son but the basic requirement is we not just as children but as son, being led of the spirit.
When we check with our experience, we would understand the distinction between we as children of God as we as sons of God, while every son of God is a child of God, we cannot say every child of God is a son of God because of the element of being led of the spirit as a result of maturity in life. Many times as children of God, we know that we deliberately disobey the promptings of the Holy Spirit to do a particular thing like evangelism, prayer, word study, self-denial etc. In the course of the week, we would be considering the matter of sonship, the benefits we get as sons, the duties of sons and the process of growth into sons.
