Words of the Ministry
Today we come to the first phase of the temptations of Jesus; the bible says after a 40 days fast Jesus was hungry and the tempter came to tempt him, first off we notice that even a 40 days fast is not enough to stop the tempter from coming around. We would be seeing that to overcome the devil we need a combination of both the word and prayers. That’s why I personally don’t encourage anyone to play down one for the other as both are essential for spiritual growth and victory. The devil approached Jesus just as he approached Eve in the garden (Gen 3), the first attack is always concerning what God says, it could be instant or written, it could be logos or rhema, the devil tries to takes us off balance, he wants you to doubt the word then he can have a foot hold. In the previous chapter the bible said Matt 3:16” And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” KJV. God the Father confirmed that Jesus is the son but the devil came tempting and saying if you are the son of God.
We see the same approach in Genesis, in Genesis 1 the bible said God created man in his image, in Chapter 3, the devil said if you disobey God and eat the fruit you would be like God. So you see the same pattern, he makes us doubt the truth, sin of unbelief, then he freely attacks us. Jesus was confirmed to be the son of God 40 days earlier and the devil came saying if you are the son of God act in a certain way. Two of the three temptations followed same pattern. The tempter, the devil wanted to attacks the ground of sonship, the truth of God’s word before presenting his need as a bait to sin before God. Before we look at the temptation to turn stone to bread, we firstly must understand the classic approach of Satan as he still does same today with us. He knows what is written, all he does is to make you see reasons why it is not true or needs to be proven true. That is opposite the Christian walk of faith, we believe it because it is written and the Holy Spirit bears witness with our Spirit.
Dear saint, what is written concerning you, what does the word say, what visions and revelations has God shown you, what assurances has God given you, what did you believe concerning your healing, deliverance, salvation, divine provision or forgiveness of sin? The devil might be introducing condemnation, guilt, anxiety and sicknesses, business may look bleak and the future hopeless, just to make you doubt God and seek other means outside God. At times like this your best friend is the Holy Spirit, he is our comforter, it is time to rehearse what was written concerning you, Hab 2:3” For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry”. You must guard your word, vision and revelations, do not let the devil use your environment to deceive you, Jesus was in the wilderness where there was no food and he was hungry so the devil felt it was an opportunity to make him doubt the word, I don’t know how bad your environment is and I don’t know the word you have and how contrary it looks to your environment but I like to leave with a word Eph 3:20-21 “20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen”.
