Words of the Ministry
This week we would be considering the matter of temptation, temptation in itself is a prompting by the devil to make us act as we would naturally want, to act in the flesh or act as led by the devil. we intend to look at the temptation of Jesus and apply possible lessons we can draw from it to our lives in a practical way. It’s an obvious truth that the devil, the tempter is all out against the righteous and would do everything within its reach to pull us into sin but thanks to God who has given us not only an example we can read about through the person of Jesus but also the Holy Spirit. With the presence of the Holy Spirit within us, we are sure of victory over the devil and his schemes.
The first thing we note here is that the bible teaches Jesus was led to a forty days fast to be tempted by the devil. For us to get most benefit from this lesson, we need to look at Jesus being tempted as a man else we may not get the full benefit the Lord has for us. Even from his responses which we would be considering within the week, we come to realize that Jesus answered and gained victory over the devil as a man and not as God. So Jesus though was God, became a man to show us the way of salvation. We would be considering the life lessons from Jesus temptation in more details within the week.
From the life of Jesus we can see that temptation is an integral part of our walk with God, it is like an examination for our spiritual promotion. We noticed that all the synoptic gospel writers commented on his birth, early years and then his temptation before his full commencement into ministry. That is to tell you that temptation is not just a must but a noted aspect of our walk with God and our choices at such time matters. The tempter has no respect for your personality; he believes if Adam failed, you can too. Jesus was tempted concerning lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life. Ours could come in a different form but the goal is same, to disrupt our fellowship and relationship with God and also deny us of our testimony.
Peter warned, 1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world”. The devil tempted Jesus after a 40 days fast and after he failed the bible said the devil left him for a while (Luke 4.13). I like to emphasize from today’s lesson that temptation is a lifelong process, we experience it at every phase of our life, we never out grow temptation and we can maximize our victory in Christ through the Holy Spirit within us.
