30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. NKJV
Words of the Ministry
Today we would be considering the title the Son of God as used in reference to Jesus, this title has been a reason for debates in religious circles as many say Jesus was but a good man and that God never had a wife and as a result cannot be said to have a son. As we read through scripture, we notice that the Jews in particular understood what the phrase meant as to be son of God meant to be one with God in likeness, it meant to be God. In John 5.16-18, the bible said the Jews wanted to kill him because he claimed God was his father, making himself equal with God. The idea of the son of God as understood by the Jew is different from what the English language portrays. To them to call yourself the son of God was to claim to be God and if you are not God, you have committed blasphemy with the penalty of death (John 19. 7).
For Jesus to be the son of God did not mean that God was his earthly father by having relationship with Mary, although it was a virgin birth through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus as the son of God is traceable to the doctrine of the trinity where God is one but three in person (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). The bible affirms this claim that Jesus is the son of God in several passages. Angels in Luke 1.35 states he is the son of God, John the Baptist testified to it, in mark 3.11 and Luke 4.41, demons and unclean spirits acknowledged him as the son of God. The disciples also later realized that Jesus was indeed the son of God Mathew 14.33, 16.15-16. The title Son of God therefore shows that Jesus is God and partakes of the divine nature. He existed from eternity as the Son of God, and became incarnate for the purpose of revealing God to human beings and bringing salvation (John 1:1; 1:14; 1:18), and that’s why Jesus is worshiped as God (John 20:28, Romans 9:5, Titus 2:13; 2 Peter 1:1).
Saints our today’s reading states clearly that we need to believe on Jesus as the son of god to have eternal life as without this believe in Jesus as the son of God, we remain dammed. That is the Gospel message and we must continually preach it as there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4.12). Jesus is the son of God and the very God, amen.
