Theme: When God is Silent (3)

Topic: A test of Faith

Memory Verse for the week: Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Today’s Reading: Luk 18:5-8

5  Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

6  And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

7  And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

8  I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Heb 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Words of the Ministry:

Yesterday we saw how sin brings a gap in fellowship between us and the indwelling Spirit. We learnt our God is too holy to behold iniquity.  We did also learn that when fellowship is broken because of sin, we should repent as God is willing and faithful to forgive us. We must never give up or give in to the suggestions of the devil. Today we would be considering the next reason why it appears God is silent towards us and that is the test of  faith. Faith as used here is persistent acting on God’s word. It is to remain resolute and committed to God regardless of what our experiences. It is to choose what the bible says over what our situation suggests.

Todays reading is about a widow who prayed to an ungodly judge asking him to avenge her. Despite the fact that the judge did not fear man nor God, he had to succumb to the persistent pressure of the widow. The Lord comparing the situation to that of the saints whose real Husband is Jesus said when he comes back, would he find such faith on earth? We notice the prolonged silence of the judge before he eventually answered, Jesus comparing that to our experiences said in Luke 18,7 that some saints that call on him day and night, although he tarries, he would eventually answer.

Our second reading brings more light to the matter, it says it is impossible to please God without faith and whosoever would come to God must believe that he is. Saying this to the saints suggests that there are times our believe would be tested, yes, we are saints but with a delay in answer would you still believe that there is a God that cares, that knows your several sufferings and that at the end of the day he would reward your persistence. Faith is therefore a test in our walk with God and our confessions. It shows if truly we believe God as this is expressed by our resolute commitment to act according to the dictates of God. When it seems the Lord is silent in your life, encourage yourself to be persistent as God is pleased with our persistence, may the Lord grant us light.
