Topic:  A closer look at Peter’s Divine Encounters

Today’s Reading:

Act 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Act 3:4-7

4  And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.

5  And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.

6  Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

7  And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.

Words of the Ministry:

Today we intend to look at divine encounter not just from the objective side but from the subjective side, in other words, we are going go be considering what happens to us as men and women that has enjoyed a divine encounter by looking more closely at the life of Peter. We saw in our previous lesson how Peter the fisherman encountered Jesus and the transformation that occurred In his life. Immediately afterwards, Peter became a follower of Jesus. On the one hand, he encountered Jesus the Godman and had a miraculous catch of fishes, afterwards he had an encounter with the Spirit of God making him know that Jesus was the very Son of God (Mat 16.16-18).

During Jesus earthly walk with his disciples, he told them of another encounter with the Spirit for salvation, power, and service. In the gospels, he told them of the promise of the father, the Holy Spirit and after his ascension he again reiterated the promise (Acts 1.8). This occurred on the day of Pentecost, so on that day, Peter again had an encounter with the Spirit of God but this time it turned him to another man. Soon after that encounter, we see the previously timid Peter became boldened. He could preach the word of God without fear or favor. We can therefore say that encounter didn’t just give him something but made him something.

From our second reading we see clearly what happened to Peter after the encounter, as we have seen in Peter’s first recorded encounter, he received a miracle of fishes but this time after the new birth and the Holy Spirit baptism, he didn’t just celebrate what God did for him but now what God is doing through him, he met a crippled man by the temple gate and he could say what I have I give you, what that means is that beyond what Jesus had done for him, Jesus had made him a solution to someone else, so at this point Peter was now bringing divine encounters to others. The man at the beautiful gate encountered Peter and we can say he had a divine encounter. Peter didn’t just get a miracle this time but was a miracle to whosoever he encountered. That is the goal of God for all the saints. We are not just to enjoy encounters but to become an encounter to our generation, a source of miracles and testimonies.  May the Lord grant us light.
