Theme: Divine Encounter (3)
Memory Verse: Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Topic: Divine Encounter in the Old Testament
Today’s Reading:
1Sa 1:15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
1Sa 1:16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
1Sa 1:17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
1Sa 1:18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
Words of the Ministry:
Today I like us to look at one example of divine encounter in the old testament, as we consider the account of a woman named Hannah (read 1 Sam 1.1-28), she was barren and had been visiting Shiloh presenting her heart desire to God but all to no avail, it looked as though the more she prayed the more her pain, her co-wife didn’t make things easier either as she made Hannah’s barren condition a point to use against her. Although Hannah never got her answer, she persisted in prayer, she didn’t blame God nor man rather she kept praying hoping something would happen.
A particular year came, while in sorrow presenting the same request to God in prayers, the Priest Eli mistook her for a drunk, he accused her of getting drunk so early in the day. Hannah didn’t take it personal, rather she poured out her heart telling the man of God the pain she had been going through. On hearing her story, Eli prayed for her, she believed, and she got her prayers answered.
The account of Hannah is quite instructive as we can learn a few things. While we would be considering how to properly position ourselves for a divine encounter in later lessons, I like us to take note of Hannah’s persistence, God’s instrument of divine encounter in her situation which in this case was a man of God and that despite the wait, God still answered her request.
Many today have lost hope, they have concluded that because their request has taken a few months or years, it can’t be God’s will. Despite being accused wrongly by a man of God that should have been able to properly discern her situation, Hannah didn’t take it personal against the prophet and that was why his prayers could still work for her. Check with your experience, how well do you hold unto God’s word and promises, have you not because of offenses block out the persons God wanted to use to uplift you, have you not been passing blames on everyone around you for the challenges you are facing. May the Lord grant us light. Join us tomorrow as we consider another example, shalom.
