Theme: Life Lessons from Saul (4)

Memory Verse: 1Co 10:12  So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall. NET

Topic:  Saul chose the people over God

Today’s Reading: 1Sa 13:11-14

11  And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

12  Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

13  And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel forever.

14  But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

Words of the Ministry:

In the last two lessons, we have seen how Saul became king, we tried to outline some of the qualities that he had that made God choose him and make him king despite his lowly background. God preferred him above all to be a king and for his seed to rule Israel forever. From today, we would be considering some of the things he did that made God replace him and made him and his linage lose the opportunity to be king forever. This is a salient warning to leaders and followers alike that they should know that the Christian walk is not just about our previous testimony but our daily conscious walk with the Lord.

As we read chapter 13, we see Saul preparing for war against the philistines and Samuel the priest was meant to do some priestly sacrifices ahead of the battle. Samuel promised to be in the camp of Israel in a week but when Saul saw the attitude of his men who were numbering 2000 now reduced to about 600, he couldn’t wait for Samuel, he decided to act on his own and by so doing he disobeyed God. When Samuel came just after Saul ended the sacrifice, Saul said he had to go on with the sacrifice against the will of God and against the instructions of Samuel because the people were deserting him and the enemies were gathering against Israel. Here we see that Saul became presumptuous and disloyal, he assumed a position he wasn’t given and was willing to do things to please the people God gave him even if it meant disobeying God. He was more scared of the opinion of men and the threat of the opposition over the God of the whole world.

Dear saints, as we read the account of Saul, we must see ourselves, God is the source of all we are and have become, many today are living in sin because of the voices around them, in some cases it is because of the people, followers or members while some it is because of their bosses or to keep a position, job or to be in the good book of men. Many today have become disloyal to God because of what God gave them, imagine Saul that honored the prophet in his early days now assumed he was equal to the prophet when he became king, Saul that hid himself when he was made king now boldly goes out to do things beyond his commission. As a wife, are you not assuming leadership of your home because of the new job or promotion. As a church member are you not being arrogant to Church authorities because your donations have increased since you got a better Job. Saints, be careful as God would replace you with a man after his heart If you don’t repent.
