Words of the Ministry

Amen, within the week we have been looking at the subject of forgiveness from various perspectives. We did emphasize it is a sin that could deny us answers to prayers, we learnt it even leads to some bodily sicknesses and that God could withdraw his forgiveness allowing the tormentors to punish the unforgiving. We learnt that unforgiveness walks in the company of other sins and if one is not careful, it may lead to us becoming more violent in our actions and attitude. Unforgiveness has broken homes, destroyed relationships, led to infidelity, strife, murder and issuance of curses. It is a means by which the devil uses our mind, will and emotion without limit. We must be watchful not to fall into his trap.

Today we want to define forgiveness by stating what forgiveness does not mean. If many are not properly guided, they may fall into the deception of the devil because they have zeal to obey God but no knowledge. What forgiveness does not mean includes the following:

  1. Forgiveness does not make the other party is right but it makes you free
  2. It doesn’t mean you lost the right of protection, if someone is abusive, you can get away from such persons.
  3. It doesn’t mean you have no basis to confront the offending party, but your forgiveness should not depend on the outcome.
  4. It doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be consequences or punishment even legally if need be but be sure it is not a revenge.
  5. It doesn’t mean reconciliation as it takes both parties to reconcile.
  6. It doesn’t mean an immediate trust of the other party like in the case of infidelity, theft, attempted murder etc.
  7. It doesn’t mean overlook bad behavior, just sweep it under the carpet.  You can still talk it over.

I like to close by attending to a common question, how do you know you have forgiven the individual? When the person comes around, his or her name is mentioned or a similar event occurs elsewhere, check you disposition, your attitude and heart condition, then you would know if you have forgiven from the heart.  May the Lord grant us light.
