Theme: Character and Destiny (2)
Topic: Power of Chastity
Memory Verse for the week: 1Co 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
Today’s Reading: Gen 39.6-9
(6) And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
(7) And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
(8) But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
(9) There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
Words of the Ministry
Today as we progress on our theme, Character and destiny. I would be considering another bible character called Joseph. The account of Joseph is a rich lesson for all saints as he was a well-rounded figure in the hands of God. I would limit my comment on his life of chastity but I like to highlight some key point on his background. Joseph was the well favored son of Jacob, he was loved by his father and hated by his brothers especially because of his dreams. He was eventually sold as a slave to the Ishmaelites by his brothers. The Ishmaelites on the other hand sold him to Potiphar. Potipher was a political leader in Egypt. Joseph found favored with him as all what Joseph did prosper because God was with him. As a result, Potipher placed all he had under the care and control of Joseph, the 0nly exception was his wife.
After some time, Potiphar’s wife took interest in Joseph, wanted to lure him to sin (immorality) but Joseph stood his ground. He told her it was not only be wrong as he would be offending his master Potiphar and ultimately he would be sinning against his God. After several failed attempts, Potiphar’s wife lied on Joseph, that cost him his position, he ended up in prison and remained in prison for several years until God brought him out of prison, made him a Pharoah and married Pharaoh’s daughter all in one day. The lesson I like to comment on in particularly is his stance to be holy and righteous despite the sinful advances of Potiphar wife. He knew the consequence of saying no and his flesh would have reminded him of what he suffered from his brothers and the Ishmaelites, the hunger, the nakedness, the cold and the unending tasked he had to do as a slave. Satan would have made several promises to him through Potiphar’s wife, she would have promised him of a better living standard, a change of status from slave to free born hence her husband had some connection etc. but to all these Joseph said no.
Saints, we live in a generation where even believers trade with Potiphar’s wife, they call it wisdom to engage in sin to rise in their various endeavors, the bible warns adulterers and adulteresses that friendship with the world is enmity with God (Jam 4.4). This generation prides itself that almost anything can be gotten through immoral relationships. We see believers dating their bosses, cheating on their spouses, trading their bodies for contracts and promotion. They feel all that matter is the false testimony they later give in church or the disgusting tithe they pay from the returns of an unchaste living. The bible commands us to come out from among such persons (2 Cor 6.17-18) and if you are such a person it’s time to repent as promotion comes only from God (Psalm 75.6-7). We saw how Joseph through God’s way and time became mighty in Egypt getting what money can’t buy, may the lord grant us light. Join us this Sunday for Peniel encounter, come with family and friends.
