Theme: Character and Destiny (1)
Topic: The several benefits of Hospitality
Memory Verse for the week: 1Co 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
Today’s Reading: Gen 18.1-5
1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
Words of the Ministry
My burden this week is on character and destiny. I would be looking at the several implications of our character to our destiny citing a few examples of scripture and emphasizing on the relationship between both. I strongly believe that one of the missing links in today’s Christian sermon is the matter of character. A lot of tongue speaking saints look down on the implication of character and as a result they lose their set mark in life.
Character is defined as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. It is those unique attitudes that sets you apart and makes men notice you either for good or bad. Regardless of how much one tries to hide his/her characters, it eventually surfaces and could make or mar our relationships with others. Destiny on the other hand is the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future, some call it fate and many believe it does change while others don’t. For believers our destiny is clear, it is to be conformed to the image of Christ and eventually cohabit with God in the new Jerusalem in eternity future but while those are our eternal destinies, every phase of our living has a destined mark and achievement and may be eventually truncated by our character as we would be seeing within the week. A man could be destined to be a medical doctor, a chief executive, a responsible father, an honorable member, preacher etc but may fail to reach his earthly destiny because of his character.
Today’s reading is about Abraham and how he entertained 3 men unknown to him were the angel of the lord and two other angels. From that episode we notice that Abraham was given to hospitality, he asked them to come to his tent gave them water, washed their feet and fed them. This act of kindness brought the 25 years expected miracles son called Isaac, the destiny of Abraham to be a father to many nations was unlocked by a singular act. Abraham also had the opportunity to know the plans of God for Sodom and that again was the window that Abraham used to intercede for lot.
Saints, the matter of character cannot be over emphasized. We have seen from Abraham, how his hospitality led to a blessing, God gave a word that even Sarah didn’t believe but still came to pass. Many saints need to improve on their hospitality, it is not a Christian attitude to be stingy and self-centered. Many can never give a cup of water to a stranger or visitor. They would never offer a bowl of meal to the hungry. The hide under the financial crunch in the society but are willing to give food and water to a friend, pastor or someone of influence all because they want some favor or want to create an impression. Heb 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. That prolonged testimony of yours could just be unlocked by hospitality, may the Lord grant us light.
