Words of the Ministry
As we consider the assurance of salvation this week, we have learnt that salvation is as simple as ABC, A being to accept, B is to believe and C is to confesses the Lordship of Christ. We saw from scripture that the word of God assures us from the outside, the Spirit of God assures us from the inside, we saw the Love for the brethren and today we would be looking at the rebuke of a living conscience. While we were part of the old creation, our hearts were far from God and our conscience was dead in sin (Tit 1.15, Heb 9.14). We made decisions based on the knowledge of evil and good and we never cared about God but through the new birth, God has given us a new heart and a new Spirit, our conscience is now ruled by the principles of life, we live surpassing the demand of the Law. We live to fulfil the demands of God.
The state of our conscience is another prove that assures us that we are saved, by virtue of our salvation, we begin to feel some sense of guilt and have reasons to repent and seek forgiveness as the situation demands. This is different from what we use to be before salvation. We see a typical example with Paul who persecuted the Church severally not caring for his conscience before his encounter with Christ, after his encounter, he strove to have a pure and free conscience before God and man (Act 24.16). So were many of us, we acted however we liked especially to those we felt could not repay us for our deeds, we never had a second thought of the consequences of our action but since the Lord gave us his Spirit and enlivened our heart (Eze 36.26), our conscience pricks us when we go astray.
Saints, from today’s reading, we see the Apostle John saying he writes to the young believers to sin not and when they sin, Jesus would be acting as our advocate with the father. That makes us realize that even the newly saved and young believers would know when they sin, they would have the internal witness and rebuke of their conscience and when this happens, they can boldly approach the throne of grace to obtain mercy. Check with your experience, do you normally have the rebuke of the Spirit in your conscience, do you now hate sin and see reasons to confess your wrong doings when necessary even when it is a little lie, anger or slander, that is an assurance you have been saved, that the Holy Spirit is at work in you. May the Lord grant us light.
