Topic:Aquila and Priscilla’ labored as a coupled with Paul in Corinth

Today’s Reading:Act 18:1-3

1  After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;

2  And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.

3  And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.

1Co 16:19  The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.

 Words of the Ministry:

As we proceed with our lesson on silent labor, we would be looking at a couple named Aquila and Priscilla, they were tent makers.  They were a dynamic duo that both labored for the gospel. The unity of purpose of this couple is a pointer to their spirituality and maturity. Paul being a tent maker also found it easy to relate with them on the grounds of business but beyond that, they were hospitability to Paul providing him shelter, food and encouragement in his missionary Journey. It is believed that Aquila was one of the seventy disciples, although not much was written about him in the gospels but we notice he alongside his wife labored with Paul with the couple appearing together in all six references, we can therefore see how well Aquila with the help of the Holy Spirit labored on his wife Priscillia to make her a disciple.

From our readding, we see that not only did this couple provide accommodation for Paul, they also provided their home as a meeting point for the church at Corinth. Those days, unlike what we have today, there were not many Churchesbuildingaround so Aquila and Priscilia provided their home as a meeting hall for the Church. Paul even after leaving Corinth still referenced them as they continually housed the Church and continued with the missionary labor of Paul. Although we do not record any miracle, signs and wonders done by this couple, Paul in his words said “Rom 16:3  Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: Rom 16:4  Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.” The couple did lay down their lives to labor for God not as the general overseer but a co-laborer with Paul on his missionary Journey. This indeed is a silent labor worthy of honor.

Dear saints, we have a lot to learn from Aquila and Priscilia, firstly we see their family life, how thecouple labored together loving the Lord not only when praying but in their daily work. How they extended the hand of fellowship to a missionary called Paul giving him room to earn a living, how they gave their home for the gospel and the Church and how they labored alongside Paul during his missionary journey when he stayed with them and after he left. How is your home patterned. Do you agree with your spouse concerning the kingdom work. How much do you labor to support the Church, are you committed to the Lord’s work when you change your location? May the Lord grant us light. Please keep in mind our meeting scheduled for the last Sunday the of May 2024.
