7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother.
9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.
Words of the Ministry:
Today we would be considering another silent labor but this time in the Old Testament, it’s the account of Jochebed the mother of Moses (Exo 6.20, Num 26.59). The account of the birth of Moses can be found in Exodus 1-2. The bible records that Moses was born at a time when Pharoah and Egypt tried to suppress the Israelites, Pharoah seeing they were growing in number and were being prosperous gave instructions that any male child born to a Jewish family be killed at birth. God preserved Moses and when his mother Jochebed realized she couldn’t hide him at home anymore, she placed him in a basket beside the river bank. The daughter of Pharoah found him, picked him up and asked his sister who was standing by to get her a maid to nurse the Child. Mariam, Moses’ sister called Jochebed the mother of Moses and that gave her the opportunity to nurse Moses rightly for the Lord.
While Jochebed nursed her son for Pharoah’s daughter, she must have been teaching him about the history of the Jews, about the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, how they became resident in Egypt and the promise God gave to Abraham. She must have taught him that although he lived with the king’s family, he was not an Egyptian, she taught him justice and the fear of God. Jochebed although living in the palace never forgot her place as a mother, she scarified the title of being called the mother of Moses to preserve her son for the purpose for which he was created. Despite wages she received, she never preferred being identified with Pharoah over the destiny of her son. She eventually raised the greatest prophet in the Old Testament who liberated the children of Israel from 430 years of slavery. Jochebed placed the feet of Moses on the right track and as he grew up, he never departed from it.
Dear saints, this is another lesson to ponder upon, many parents don’t realize that they are custodian for God and the Children they are raising is for kingdom expansion. Parents are to prepare their children to contend with the evils in Egypt, to stand for righteousness and to represent God not forgetting their identity when they are in Egypt or Babylon which is a representation of Higher institution or the larger society. Do you have time for your children as a parent, do you spend time teaching them that in all their pursuit they should live to see the kingdom of God manifested and soul bound in slavery of sin delivered, Are you satisfied that among your peers you have entered the palace, has the wages of Egypt distracted you from the promised land?, the palace could be your Job and the wages could represent the salary and other benefits, has the job and wages distracted you from the higher calling of raising Godly children? What would be said about your children in years to come? May the Lord grant us light. Please keep in mind our Peniel Meeting for May coming up this Sunday, the 26th by 4pm.
