Topic: Dorcas good deeds brought her back to life

Today’s Reading: Act 9:39-41

39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

40  But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

41  And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.

 Words of the Ministry:

This week I would spend some time on bible characters whose labor although silent made considerable impact during their time, and their lives remain a reference point for us today. The first person I would be considering is a woman called Dorcas who is also known as Tabitha. The account of Dorcas could be found in Acts 9.36-43. Dorcas was an ordinary disciple whose story stood out in the very busy books of the Acts of the apostles. The account said she was a very benevolent disciple who shared all she had with the widows and less privileged, she even sowed garments for them. All this she did not expecting anything in return and neither did she realize that both God and man were taking note of her kindness.

Dorcas took ill and she died, the account said the disciples didn’t bury her, rather they sent men to Apostle Peter to come pray for her, as soon as Peter arrived, the widows she has helped were all weeping showing Peter the garments she sowed them and they also informed him of her good deeds. On hearing how benevolent she was, Peter prayed and God restored her back to life. I believe even Dorcas must have been surprised to see how emotional the widows and orphans were and how much her little act of kindness did matter to those around her.

Saints, the case of Dorcas should be a lesson to us all. Our testimony before men matters not only to God but men. Imagine Dorcas was as stingy and self-centered like many of us, we wouldn’t have even heard of her story. Dorcas died and the whole community missed her, they were all in tears hoping she came back to life all because she made a positive contribution to those around her, that is what it means to shine the light so that the world would see your good works and glorify your father in heaven. Ask yourself, if you die today, what would you be remembered for, those neighbors, staff, colleagues, your spouse, children, students, the poor and widows around you, what would be their testimony. Would they wish you never died or would they say it serves you right, now they can rest. May the Lord grant us light.  Saints, keep in mind our once a month Peniel Meeting coming up on 26th May, 2024. Shalom.
